While researching different parts for my current htpc, I ran across the statment "DVI does not carry audio" many times. Seeing as how I was going to use my old Ati 3870 as my video card I figured I'd have to research audio cables since this card only has two dvi outputs and 1 s-video. My tv only has hdmi, component, and composite connections. I built the pc and wanted to see if it was working, so I had no interest in the audio at this point.

I took an hdmi cable I had and used a dvi to hdmi adapter that came with the video card to connect to my tv. That was the only cable running from pc to tv. I turned everything on and to my surprise I had audio too.

Is this normal? Does dvi actually carry audio, unlike what I previously read?? Also how do I know if I'm getting 1080p from this connection?
