Hi, I just purchased a Home Theater System (RCA RTD317) and i have it connected to my TV via HDMI, now my tv is a Toshiba 32VA502R, and i want the devices plugged into it (xbox 360, satalite receiver and bluray player) to have their audio put out on the home theater, but the home theater only has a component video out, 1 audio in and hdmi on it, now i have the audio out on my tv connected with the audio in on the home theatre and the only sound i get out of my home theatre is when i play a dvd on the dvd player that is in the theater system itself, does anyone know how i could get this to work or maybe know how i could (if i need to buy anything new)? thanks
You can't go through the tv to the surround system.
The optical output on the tv is ONLY for getting 5.1 surround from your local HD channels, via the built-in tuner, when using an antenna. It is not for daisy chain connections, like you're trying to do. The tvs that pass audio that way at all, will downmix the 5.1 signal to 2.0 and send to surround system that way. The best you can hope for is Dolby Pro Logic II (simulated surround).
You need to send the audio out from each source, to the surround system, to get surround sound. If you don't have enough digital inputs, you'll need to decide what you want in surround (probably DVD), or buy a receiver with enough digital inputs.
If you have the dvd player connected by digital, in the player's setup menus, make sure the player is set to output audio by "Bitstream". If you have the cable box connected by digital, in it's setup menus, make sure the audio output is set to "Dolby Digital". If you have to assign any digital inputs, to what you're plugging in to it, your owner's manual will walk you through it.
I'm not familiar with the Xbox 360, so you'll need to use the manual to get it setup.
Good luck!
Thanks for the info, but i didn't even mention the optical output................... and i assumed that it would be the case to decide or get a new one to let them all in, which i will not be doing, anyways thanks again.

From what you said, I took it for granted you used the optical out on the tv. You wouldn't believe how many people think they can get 5.1 surround that way. Afterall, if you weren't trying to get surround, why even bother with a home theater system?
