I was given a nice 5.1 Surround Sound systeam 2 front 2 rear centre and sub woof..Problem is they have lost the sound systeam amp that came with this. The conections are rca is there a amp you can buy or some sort of conection to conect all the speakers then connect through one cable to my main amp if that makes sence or do i just need to get a surround sound amp just for the systeam

I love these "I was given xxxx but they "lost" some bits" .. more like "they stole them and forgot the important bit" and need to get rid of the evidence quick...

you need a decoder and some amps (any old hi-fi amps will do.. literally anything that will drive speakers) for the resulting signals.. probably cost more than going to wallyworld and buying another 5.1 setup and chucking the speakers.

Sounds like you need a receiver.
Speakers don't connect to receivers with RCA type connectors. They either use the plain wire stripped back a little, or use banana plugs, depending on the type of speaker connections on the back of the receiver. This is the cheapest good receiver I know of: http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR507-5-1...63795383&sr=1-7
Right now it's $306.

What kind of speakers are they? Are they tiny little cube type speakers, or bigger shelf speakers? If they're small speakers that came with an HTIB (home theater in a box), there's a chance they could be 2 ohm, 4 ohm, or up to 8 ohm. If they are 2 ohm, they're not going to work well with a regular receiver. They will put too much load on it, and either cause it to shut down in "Protect" mode, or fry something inside it.

Here is a cheaper receiver: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-STR-DH500-5-1...63795383&sr=1-8
Sony makes very good tvs and blu ray players, but not so great with receivers. They are just ok. The Onkyo I linked to above is much better, and more future proof than the Sony. Look around on Amazon.com and you might find something else you like. Look under home theater systems, and you may find a whole new HTIB you like. Then the speakers will be sure to match the receiver.
Good luck!
