I have searched extensively and cannot find a fast DVD ripper so that I can convert all of my dvds into avi's to host on a server to not use dvds any more. This way I can access my dvd library without using a disk. ANy ideas greatly appreciated.

AutoGK, and convert to an AVI(Divx), or HandBrake, and convert to an mp4/MKV(H.264).

I use DVD Fab Platinum. Time to rip averages about half the length of the movie. For example, if the movie is 2 hours long, it takes about one hour to convert. There have been only a few movies that I have had to use other software (some Disney movies and Wallace & Gromit features) and those software programs take a lot longer to use.

Erm the Platinum ie paid version of DVDFab most certainly does convert DVD's to AVI's

Eh ?, AutoGK most certainly does, i didn't imagine the weeks of CPU time spent crunching (batch queued) DVD's into AVI's..

Nice. In which case you could batch queue movies in AutoGK and each one takes just an hour. Or there's the other suggestions, some of which i haven't used.

so an hour to get 1 dvd to avi. I read all of these other programs claiming they can do it much faster etc. I am looking for anything fast and not ruining the quality so I can not use my discs and just access my library from my tv.

In my setup (Quad Core) i have AutoGK taking an hour for each DVD, converting to 1.4GB takes 1 hour as it the program does 2 passes. Nowadays i tend to convert down to 699MB, it still takes an hour.
Ripping the movie beforehand takes all of 15 minutes.
I did most of my conversions in huge batches over a period of literally about 2 weeks solid, after spending long sessions ripping said movies (i had 6 dvd burners on the go concurrently to speed up the ripping process, then batch queued AutoGK with say groups of roughly 15 movies at a time, i split the work across the Quad Core and one of my Dual Core machines. It's not a difficult or time consuming job really, i can't vouch for other programs. Other than DVDFab Platinum, that runs quicker but then i've only used DVDFab in one pass mode the few times i used it for converting to AVI.
To convert the other way round ie AVI to DVD, i normally use ConvertXtoDVD which only takes 15 mins per movie.
A the end of the day AutoGK converting in an hour is very quick indeed.. Plus by batch queueing the conversions you can just leave the PC to it (you can still use the PC in between as it's stil usable, especially on a Quad Core.
I would normally kick off say 15movies at a time so they would be finished overnight, i'd check they were ok, queue up another 15 for the daytime, check they were done by the night, then queue up another set for the night. This way i got the bulk of my movies converted in a fortnight such that i didn't have to keep going back and doing more for weeks and months. It was worth it as now i only convert the odd one now and then.

The only sync issues i've had with AutoGK were due to not ripping correctly, in my case this was DVDFab not correctly ripping the movies or me not having cleaned the movie files after DVDFab (with vobblanker)

As i say the only films AutoGK did that were out of sync were ones where they weren't ripped correctly. There were many hundreds that turned out ok, i spent literally a fortnight ripping and converting hundreds of films

Not sure, you could try vobblanker (free) ~ http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/
I always do my movies in main movie mode, one benefit to this is that i don't have to mess about figuring out which audio track and subtitles to choose in AutoGK

For sync problems, I use VirtualDub MP3 Freeze. It's pretty intuitive (for a dummy like me) and free. It works really well when the sync problem is constant. However, for AVIs that start out OK, then gradually get worse and worse, I'm just as stumped as the next guy:-)

Too many steps ?.
Rip in main movie mode -> AutoGK -> select size of output file -> run AutoGK -> done.
