crc errors on original dvd?

hi there,
An elderly friend has given me an original DVD (Arkle - something to do with horseracing) to try and resolve.
Problem :
It won't play on his DVD player, but plays fine on his brother's and indeed mine.
Plays fine on my PC also.
His brother has tried doing a straightforward copy to no avail.
I thought I would run it through DVDShrink and ConvertXtoDVD thus recoding it, but to no avail (loads and loads of crc errors on reading original dvd)
The DVD is an original and is unmarked.
I'm guessing it's somekind of data error that some DVD players are able to error-correct.
How do I capture the error-corrected version and burn it for him? (or your suggested solutions appreciated!)

Anyone?

hi m8,
thanks for response
already tried DVDD with scubapete's recommended settings, just gives endless 'bad sector' messages
what i can't get my head around is : if it plays ok, surely it should rip ok?
any other suggestions?
