First post here, but have used this place many times for answers to my problems. I've tried searching for this issue but it's hard to search for the different items of my issue. I'm also not sure what the appropriate forum is for this question, so I hope I get it right.
I'm attempting to copy a DVD, and I've run into a few issues that I'm unable to get past. I've tried to use DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, InfraRecorder, Alcohol 120%, UltraISO, and UltraISO. With every one of these programs, I get a CRC error and it is unable to continue. I have also tried to just drag and drop the files from the disc into and VIDEO_TS folder with the same results.
The things that I've come across so far seem to indicate that the disc was intentionally made with corrupt and/or dummy files to prevent copying. When I right click on the disc under My Computer, it shows that it is 2.47 GBs. When I open the disc and check the size of the VIDEO_TS folder, it says that it is 27 GBs. That is what makes me think the files were intentionally corrupted and made to look larger than they actually are.
Copying the files was successful when I used VOB Blanker, but when I attempted to burn an image or disc with InfraRecorder, it said that the VIDEO_TS folder was missing. It also still saw the files as being 27 GBs worth. PgcEdit sees the various VTSs (there are 11 that show up as 2.5 GBs) are showing up but say "Found 0 buttons." DVD Shrink will open the VIDEO_TS folder, but also show that it's too big. I suppose I might be able to reauthor it but I don't have much experience doing that.
I'm not sure what details are important, so I will include all that I can think of. I'm using XP SP3, the latest versions of all the programs listed, the DVD is called "See What I Mean: Differences Between Deaf and Hearing Cultures", the disc plays fine and is mostly scratch free, and I'm doing this for a library. This means that I have the legal right to make this copy, as long as I create one backup and put the original in storage.
I would greatly appreciate anyone's input to the issues I'm having. I am hoping to get this copied before the end of this week (July 1, 2011) since I'm on a bit of a deadline. I'm also hoping that this doesn't drive me insane before that time.
The likes of the Star Trek movie had umpteen titles, but when played back on the DVD player (or on the PC using MPC-Home Cinema) it was Title 21 that was the real one.
You might try again with DVD Shrink, select Re-author' and drag the appropriate Title from right to left pane then backup.
Note that the free or commercial Decrypters like DVDFab or AnyDVD might not be able to handle this DVD inasmuch as I doubt it was popular enough to warrant the work involved.

Im going to attempt to reauthor this disc. I wish I could make a full ISO to preserve the menu system, but I might not have time for that.
This disc is doing something similar to the Star Trek disc you mentioned. It has just under 100 titles. Thats another interesting thing I noticed. When I went to re-author, I noticed that there are about 11 copies of the exact same video. I know that there arent that many files that make up all "27 GB", so Im guessing that they are pointers to the original file that are duplicating the original without actually storing multiple copies.
If this is some sort of protection scheme, it is the craftiest Ive seen so far. I dont know whether this is some mistake, or if the company just really wanted to keep backups from being made. For now, I just re-authored it using the first video from each sequence that contained the same set. It seemed to work as I was creating an ISO and burning it to a disc. However, when I went to play it, it appears that there is nothing on it.
