I am a newbie and have shrunk two movies but I cannot play them on my computer. They play fine on my dvd player but computer doesn't even recognise that a dvd is in the drive. I have tried this with Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10 and after the initial spin up the drive light goes out. I cannot not explore the disk on My Computer or mount the disk in Ubuntu. How can I get these computer operating systems to read the disks? Are these disks useless to view on my computer or can they be salvaged?

You used DVD Shrink to process the files, then burned the disk on your PC, now your PC doesn't recognize the disk when you put it back in the burner?
What program did you use to burn the disk?
Does the burner recognize other DVD's without a problem?

Gee, I'm having the same problem... I made a back up on an XP Pro computer using DVDshrink to make an ISO, and burning on an HP external burner with Nero 8, using the ISO. Is there another way I should be doing it? Nothing on my computer will play the DVD, but my stand alone DVD player (budget Walmart) will. I am open to any suggestions on technique, since I'm no expert, and pushing the envelope of my capabilities.

Thank you for the suggestion.
As I said, I have limited capabilities, and consider myself only an amateur. At the link you suggested, it says to go into the registry, and that's something I simply do not mess with. It also sounds like that's for when the computer doesn't recognize the drive. Mine does, and even identifies the DVD. The problem is that it just won't play.

For years everyone said Nero was absolutely the way to go, for burning DVDs. Now I finally have Nero. I downloaded ImgBurn a year or so, ago, but if I remember correctly, it's a trial and costs money eventually. I can't buy another program. I appreciate your attempt to help, though.

Really? Then I'm certainly willing to consider it.... Can you tell me in what ways you prefer it?
Thanks for the help.

Why are these disks not being recognised by the system. The drive is fully functioning. It works with other disks but not the ones done with DvdShrink and Nero. Is there any way, short of redoing them, which can make the drive read the disks?

LOL You're addressing 2 different posters...... I'm the one whose system does recognize it. Which of us were you trying to answer?

But you said this in your first post...
Quote: Gee, I'm having the same problem
referring to the thread started by neander, who said...

...not complaining - just wondering.

MY BAD!! You're absolutely right. I was too casual, ie: I said "same problem", when it was only similar. I was focused on the part about I shrunk em but can't play em. Sorry.

Hey, Neander, which Nero do you have? I don't have any help for you, but since I'm having some problems, too, I've been checking around the forums, and I remember someone mentioning loving earlier Nero, but dissatisfaction with the newest or newer Nero.

The link referring to the filters has an on-line 'Fix it' button - but you can also run ImgBurn and look for and optionally remove the filters too.
In this example there is no entry in the Upper Class Filters, but there is an entry for a program in Lower Classs Filters.
If you removed the Lower Filters, you are doing the same thing that the fixit button or manually cleaning the Registry does.
