How reduce file for DVD

I want to copy a file to one single-sided dvd , but the file is too large.
The mpg file is 4.6 gb , which is just too large for a DVD.
I dont mind losing a small bit of quality to save on buying double layered dvd's.
I usually use AVSto DVD to creat my mpg files from AVI, then IMGBurn to copy to DVD.
I think DVD shrink may help ? But not sure how to create the right type of file ?

AVStoDVD takes the source and fits it to the selected DVD size - an exception might be that the source is already DVD compliant and it's set to reuse compliant video.
If you'r taking a source and having it output an mpeg2 file instead of a DVD compilation, then that might be a problem too.
DVD Shrink will open a DVD compliant folder that contains the IFO, BUP and VOB files - I'm not sure that that is what you have.

Your AVSto DvD does right file format as you already know. Use DvdShrink on the files it created.
Open Shrink, Use open folder at top, navigate to where AVSto DvD put files.
Click on that folder, OK
Backup! Burn those files to DvD.

Thanks for the replies guys.
attar - I have checked my AVStoDVD settings, and there is n option that IS ticked , that says 'Keep MPEG2 DVD Compliant video'. Do I need to untick that , so it will compress the MPEG file to fit the DVD ?
Aldii - Using your option , which option do I use in AVStoDVD to create the folder that DVD Shrink uses ? Is it 'Output' @DVD folder structure' ?
(and is the input file the AVI or MPEG file ? )

Options > Preferences > Video, uncheck the box box for compliant video if you want to fit the output to DVD5 (under DVD Size on the top menu).
Notice what happens when the box is checked - the output is too big for a DVD5.

I have tried unticking the box for compliant video. I then get a message "MPEG2 Video stream in 'filename.mpg' It is strongly recommended you index it."
I have tried saying yes and no to that question. It then seems to do some encoding and authoring, but for some reason doesnt do the burning to DVD step ?

Allow it to index the source.
On the top menu, change the output setting to 'Burn DVD'.
You won't get an output folder, it will burn the disk (if you have one in the burner).
Reason why you might prefer to save to a folder without burning is to play the output from that folder to verify everything is ok.
Then you can close AvsToDVD and use ImgBurn to finish.

Hi Attar
To save it to a folder , do I choose the option 'DVD folder structure' ?
If I save the file to a DVD folder structure, when it comes to the Burning process, do you just copy the VOB file , or somehow the whole folder ?

Yes.
The default is that the saved folder is named DVD_0 or DVD_1 etc.
Inside there is a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folder.
Run ImgBurn > Write Files/folder to disk.
Either browse to or simply drag VIDEO_TS onto the window and burn.
