Hey everyone. I have looked around in here and on youtube to find out how to use SUPER to convert my dvd collection to avi as so my Playstion can read it. I just downloaded it and I am lost. I have been using DVDShrink to take all the extra's out THEN decode??..Or can SUPER do all of it for me??...

Make it easy on yourself. Ditch Super and use AutoGK for .avi conversion. Less setup and easy to use.

Step 1=Copy main movie only from disc to hard drive. Take out all menus and extras. Using DVD Shrink you mentioned heres a guide
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/..._dvd_shrink.cfm
If main movie is too big to fit on standard DVD i shrink it to fit one.
Step 2=Run AutoGK. You have many options but main ones are choose final file size, and type of .avi (Divx or Xvid).

I have made about 500 .avi's this method, and stream them wirelessly to my PS3 with good quality.

Thank You, I will give it a try. Will it give me dvd quality avi? Size is not a factor since I will have a 500g HD in my Playstation.

I keep mine at 1GB (1024mb) final file size. Many people make them around 700mb so they fit on a blank CD. The program is free and easy so if you don't like it at 1GB you can customize until you find your sweet spot.
As far as quality, it looks a bit blocky setting arms length from a 52" HDTV but under normal circumstances I feel it looks as good as tv quality, maybe a hair less than dvd quality.

Seems like Im highjacking my own thread but Im having issues with autogk recognizing my video ts files. Like I said, using dvd shrink and when I try to select ALL the video files in the video ts folder it wont let me select all of them at once to put them in the input file of autogk. Any suggestions? Thank you for all the help

You don't choose all the files, or the TS folder like you do in other programs.

I'm not too good with technical terms but If you open the video_ts folder you see your different files, one of them should be vts_0_1.ifo and it is the directory for how to put together the different chapters of the movie. By choosing the .ifo file, it automatically strings together 0_1.vob, 0_2.vob, 0_3.vob, etc.

I stole this image from their tutorial page http://www.autogk.me.uk/modules.php?name=TutorialEN

The line below the output file where it shows video info. That line only pops up when you put a valid input file in. Try an .ifo and see what happens.

After I open the main folder for the video ts files, I would copy ALL files (usualy around 5) and put them in the input folder on OTHER programs. Didnt realize I just needed the one file on Autogk. Ill give it a shot.

Ok I have done what you told me and followed the steps on there website but the "Start" button is not highlighted so I can start the proccess.

WOW...great program. Kudos to you for the suggestion. Deleting SUPER after this post. One question, How can I see my progress of conversion? Seems to take a little more time than it should. Maybe because of the quality of conversion Im doing. Great video quality.

AutoGK is actually a program that automates the use of other encoding programs. It isn't doing the work, it regulates the programs that are. I usually watch how fast it goes through all the different programs to check progress. It usually takes around 30min to complete AutoGK for me but I have a faster machine than a store boughten one.
Glad you like the program.

On my old laptop it takes about 6 hours for a movie...Makes me want to buy a faster one..Two more questions and Ill leave you alone. What kind of audio do you recomend?? Right now Im using the Auto setting but the sound is kinda low. Also how big can I go with the size of the video? Im using your recomendations and it is pretty good but on some of my more modern dvd's (copying older ones to test) I was wanting to get the best I can get and the tutorials say that it might split the movie if I go to big.

Laptops are nice and have their purpose, but encoding movies aren't one of their strong points. These programs use nearly all a computers processor power which most laptops are short on anyway, and that heavy processor use equals more heat which isn't a laptops friend either. If you keep the vents free of dust and don't mind letting it work overnight while you sleep though you'll be fine.
On audio, because I strip out the extra audio during the DVDShrink step, i really don't have a choice during the AutoGK step. I keep Dolby5.1 or stereo if its an older movie but I've never really had an audio issue while doing this process.
As far as tutorials saying it splits the movie, it only does that sometimes. If you look at the predefined output sizes

you see the ones that are predefined as 1CD, 2CD, or 3CD with the size of mb in parentheses behind them. You can switch to custom size instead of predefined, and make 1 file as big or little as you want but if you type in your custom size the same as the predefined size (1400,2100) it will automatically split them. To get around it, call them 1401,2101 if you want that size...
Sorry for the long rant, hope this answers everything and since you frame your questions intelligently and aren't a general pest like some people who live anonymously online don't worry about "two more questions and leave me alone"---feel free to ask anything if there are any other issues

Im a member of other forums and I understand about how some people can be 'pests'. With my recent purcase of a PS3 and finding out that I can put my movies on it Ive been real excited about this topic. I'll give the "2101" suggestion a try when I get to my better quality of DVD's.
I do the same with my audio using DVDShrink (like the tutorial suggests), but Ill double check my settings.Like you said my laptop has been getting hot the last couple of days and was going to download AutoGK on my PC but I doubt that it will process a movie as fast as yours.
If I wanted to upgrade some of my components on my PC to do this faster, what direction do I need to go? More RAM??
Ive also been thinking of backing up my Blue Ray collection. Im sure this is more difficult than normal DVD's. Have you done this? Can you get the same video quality?
I know there is probably another forum in hear that answers these questions but since I have your ear.......

I leave movies on my computer/media server and stream them to my PS3 using the PS3 media server program. My server is in the basement floor of my house wired to the router/wireless access point on the main floor. My PS3 is in my bedroom on the 2nd floor of my house networked wirelessly.
As far as upgrading, a good processor along with its proper motherboard would be the best way to increase speeds of this whole movie backup business. Most people who custom build, myself included, use a quad core processor. You will want something better than a laptop if you want to do bluray. I just recently started learning the process backing up my small collection as i found a good deal on a bluray reader and slapped it in my media server.
Look here for instructions for bluray

Very happy with the "2101" setting. Puts the movie about 1.5g with dvd quality video. I have the PS3 Mediaserver on my laptop and its what I use to copy my movies from computer to PS3. But the reason I want everything on the PS3 and not using the mediaserver is to make it easier on wife/kids to key up a movie and watch it not worring about having to turn on computer. Besides with my wireless laptop things can get a little jumpy on a big video file.
I have to agree that if/when I try to copy BR movies I would have to do it on my PC. Dont have the BR player for it but all it takes is money and could have one. Thanx for all your help. Ill check the link you posted.
