I've got bout 200 dvds i want to back up to an external hard drive.
1 - What is the easiest way, ideally a single package.
2 - What is the cheapest way.

Is there a best format to use?

Checked the guide but way too complicated for a beginner like myself.

Using windows 7.

Convert them to an MP4 format with Handrake then transfer them to the hard drive. After a single sided DVD is converted it ends up approximately 800mb's in size. You can download it from Afterdawn from this link. You need to remove the encryption from the DVD first before you convert them.

Thanks JST1946

I had a piece of software a couple of years ago on another pc (i put a couple of films on my ipod)that used decrypt a dvd in seconds, it had a smiley face icon by my toolbar clock when not in use and this changed to a devil / demon when in use do you have any idea what that would be? the reason i ask is i downloaded a decrypter the other night and it was taking forever.

How long should a decrypter take on a dvd? can you reccomend a good one?

Both of my grandads came back from WW2, got 2 uncles in the liverpool scottish ta regiment and lost a second cousin (mark burgan) in afghanistan from the irish guards..appreciate your pride in serving.

ripping a dvd shouldn't take more than 10mins depending on the machine,a dual core less than 5min assuming you set program to dvd9 if you don't preset to no compression it can take a while as it will compress on the fly,as for converting to mp4 it all depends on what preparation you've done to the dvd like running it thru shrink to cut front & end frames, remove extra lang & other crap, the smaller you can make the the resulting dvd without using compression at this stage the quicker encode & better quality movie you will get,if you want to set size to a specific gb use vidcoder,it's handbrake in a different form however allows setting per gb & like hb has presets
