My ultimate goal is converting DVDs to compressed formats that I can back up play on mobile devices. The only consistent difficulty has been decrypting with the correct audio track.

I really miss DVDDecrypter, but since development stopped it often won't work. All the threads I can find seem out of date and they recommend software that is also out of development or too expensive. I need a basic decrypter that allows me to select the English audio track and turn off subtitles. DVDFab was perfect but once the trial ran out $50 seemed a little steep for a ripper.

Are there any free or cheap, current, up-to-date alternatives to DVDDecrypter???

The decrypter part of DVDFab HD Decrypter doesn't run out.
It can still be selected.
