I have a serviio based DLNA server setup, and Im now hooked on going discless at my house for movies. I want high quality though. Im still learning about all of this, and keep running into issues. I want to rip my DVDs and store them with 100% quality if possible. I am not worried about size. I tried several VOB combining programs, vob to mpg programs that all retained 100% quality. As you may guess, I run into this issues:

The resulting vob or mpg files are 720x480 and are distorted on my LGHD TVs. I did an avi conversion, and it came out 720x384. The size was great, but the quality wasnt there. I have gone through the sticky threads in this forum, and tried every tool I could find that looks like it might do the job. I cannot find anything that will allow me to do a lossless dvd rip in a format that can be served up to my TVs in a format that will fit the screen. Can anyone give me any tips? Thanks, Matthew
Why would you think a 720 would display ok in full screen on a 1080 viewing panel,that's some serious upscaling which in turn requires some serious stretching,your best bet if blu ray is not an option is to use the tv's aspect & crop settings to give a little bit of correction however it will mean black bars present top & bottom,there is the zoom function if your tv has it problem with that is you lose picture,that's all i got for advice apart from getting a smaller tv :p

I don't expect it would work that way now. Initially, I just assumed since the DVD played properly from the DVD player if I ripped it to a native format it would playback properly this way as well. You are saying should stream the movie through my blu ray player instead of directly to the TV? I'm am trying that now, and it looks perfect! I didn't realize that the blu ray player would still do the work and convert it when it was a streaming movie through DLNA. So, if this is my answer, I will get another blu ray player for my TV that doesn't have one. So, I assume the best way to keep it at 100% quality is just to use the native VOB files (but combine them). Is there any way to reduce the size at all and keep 100% quality? I do use Clone DVD to strip out all the extras I don't need.
LMAO...playing thru your blu ray isn't what i meant however it does answer your question i think so if the blu ray player can run the movie so it looks ok then it means the player you used to display the movie the first time round needs it's settings changed that's what i meant by using aspect & crop in other words change settings in the player itself,this what i need to do to movies i watch but for different reason,i use the aspect or crop setting to lessen the size of the black bars but not so much i loose part of the frame as an example a quick method is use zoom parts of the outside edges of the picture gets lost which is why i prefer to keep at least part of those black bars present
To reduce size of the ripped vob but still keep a fair bit of quality is to compress but don't go below 80% compression & use a cutting tool to remove the front & end frames (front of movie will play say warner brothers crap & other advert shit while the end frames carry the credit garbage)removing them can save anything from 0-500mb,you can use dvdshrink or better still nero recode for this action,however this can only be done on the main movie if you say want to keep the menu intact & any extra's the best thing is to use dvd's even if you have to split the movie over two of them (which i do this gives me a 100% non compressed backup)now that's done i can then if i so choose,strip the crap away then cut front & end frames then compress to an avi for use on the xbox or 360,well that's my theory anyway,If however you want to convert to an avi for say to save space i'm uncertain to what vert or horiz you can go,however 1.5gb-2gb final file size usually gives pretty good picture,member attar would be able to better advise you on that & most probably a two or three pass for best results
Thanks for all the info. I honestly wasn't sure which you meant regarding the blu ray player. I have hundreds of DVDs, so switching all to blu ray isn't an immediate option. The player I tried first is the native player on my LG TV. It doesn't have any options that I can really find to set that will stick. I can for the HDMI, Component, etc connections. There is nothing I can find for the 'Media' connection. My Samsung blu ray player on the other hand seems to be handling it flawlessly. I've ripped 5 movies, and all are working perfectly. Screen is filled, and everything looks great.
I guess I will stick with the native VOB files but combined into a single one. 3 TB USB drives are under $200, and I should be able to fit around 500 full length movies per drive. I'm weird about the quality stuff. Even if it isn't noticeable, it bugs me if I know it has been reduced. I will have to get some more blu ray discs at some point, but my DVD library is too large for now. Thanks again!
Since you have the dvd's already they can be used as backup in which case ripping & editing them & converting to avi or mkv etc would be the way to go as it will save space & heaps of it, have a play with i think it's dvdflick or is it autogk,meh one of them does the conversion to avi,what you need for quality is not a high screen resolution but a high Bitrate once the dvd is converted,if you want more expert help send attar a pm he's far more knowledgeable on this stuff than i am,or you could & i assume it wouldn't break forum rule post in the thread below & just ask him to read thru your post & see what he advises if he's able,remember don't ask the question just see if he can visit your thread,that way no hijacking is taking place
