Make Mkv alternative in freeware

Hello,
Make mkv, a program that did protection stripping from dvds has gone from beta (free) to pay for in version 1.7.3 and disallows further use of the beta version.
What is the current best and easiest freeware to use for this task?

The way I understood it, the DVD ripping features of MakeMKV were supposed to always remain free while you just have to pay for the Bluray ripping. Is that not how it works?
If not, there's a free version of DVDFab for decrypting DVDs. I still use RipIt4Me mostly, although I do come across the odd DVD which it can't rip.

Are you sure it's not just that your older Beta version has expired? Version 1.7.3 is still listed a freeware on AfterDawn.

All I know is my copy pulled up a message that says time is up. I could go get the exact text but it appears that it just timed out.
I use DVDFab but Fab was cooking my burner and dvds. Using Make Mkv for one operation and a variant of Handbrake called Vidcoder was going to be my new routine to cut down on the laser heat. Less heat from encoding a disk file even though that disk file from Make mkv comes out huge. Vidcoder takes over to make it a reasonable size. Vidcoder is freeware.

I have no bluray disks and no bluray player. If you can confirm that it would contradict what I see as termination of a trial version.

Well I quick look around the MakeMKV forum:
MakeMKV is free while in beta
As stated on a main page all features of MakeMKV are free while program is in beta. You may purchase the full activation key if you like the program and want to show your support, but you also may use the temporary beta key.
The current beta key is
T-rUQTumnC@UKK1bt1kaiRbR4V99wA13ZRKe5Fbw0qEdmKXBtJyrwOVxTQTwMhdgg8Vr
and is valid until end of April 2012. Please check back for updated key on this page.
I don't know whether you must be running the latest version.

Were you running DVDFab in the background and converting the video directly from the disc?
If so you should be able to rip the disc to your hard drive for converting with the free version of DVDFab as you're doing now with MakeMKV (at least I'm pretty sure you can). Whichever program, I'd have thought they'd take about the same amount of time to copy a DVD to your hard drive.

Boy, that flipping screen to post replies is really annoying.
Anyway, if you get the latest version 1.7.3 and use the reg. key provided above, the program won't expire until May 24, 2012. I just tried the key with success. Plus I think the previous version 1.7.2 expires earlier.

I'm reviewing this thread and I see now that Fab in one of their disc to file routines may be something I have overlooked. Thanks for that insight. I'm in the habit of using Fab in just one way-- a couple clicks and it goes. Are there any steps in a preferred order to do this? And can Fab do it in mkv format?
Having a three core machine (and just built it) is fun to watch work (in Speedfan for instance) but when I see that temp go up toward the limit I start to get concerned.

Glad you got it working.
I know almost nothing about DVDFab, but I'd assume it rips DVDs to your hard drive in the traditional way (using vob files) whereas MakeMKV uses MKV. They'd both still contain the original DVD video, only the latter puts it into an MKV container.
I'd assume DVDFab has the ability to rip the whole DVD, or to rip just the movie etc. Whether you end up with vob files or MKV files on your hard drive though, if the purpose of ripping the DVD is to convert it then it doesn't matter. Pretty much any conversion program should be able to work with vob files. In fact, that's the way it's "usually" done, although there's no reason I know of not to use MakeMKV.

I'm confused. Above there I just asked the questions about how to use the program in a different way. I've not gotten anything done yet but I did capture some pages of a how-to which I have yet to print out. The printing out of pages is tedious but flipping back and forth in screens just makes me dizzy. More tedious due to the fact that I have to go to public library to use their printer. I haven't had one for years.
