I have been searching and reading everything I can find but I can not find the answer I need. I hope someone has a simple answer for me or even direct me to the answer if its on here.

I am putting all of my movies on an external hard drive connected to my wireless network. I want to be able to watch them on the computer and on the tv with WD TV Live (or a new tv someday). What is the best format to save them in? The VHS tapes are being recorded in .mpg but I have a ton of DVDs that I will be copying as well. What is the best software to use to convert files and copy DVDs?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I would rip the disks using DVDFab HD Decrypter.

Depending on the amount of space I wanted to allocate to each movie, I would convert the main title to a single, large .mpg file using Vob2MPG (optionally use DVD Shrink on the ripped files to reduce the size of the file, then use Vob2MPG) - assuming that your external drive is formatted NTFS to accommodate single files larger than 4GB.

Keeping the movie as mpeg2 ensures maximum quality, however converting to .mp4 keeps most of the quality in a smaller file size - StaxRip is handy for that conversion.

If AVI format suits, it's hard to go wrong with AutoGk which handles batch conversions very well and on a multi-core PC, is quite speedy.
