I have some dvd backups that I want to rip to mkv's. I know I should rip from the originals but they are scratched and unplayable (that's why I made backups). I use Handbrake to rip my dvd's. Since the video on the dvd's has already been compressed to some degree during the backup process, is there anything I should do or change on Handbrake to ensure I retain the quality. I know I can't get the quality from the original back but what can I do to retain the quality of the backup? I'm satisfied with the quality of the backup dvd's (I can't tell the difference from the original!) so I would like to get a dvd rip of equal quality.

Compress them as usual and see if the quality is satisfying
