Ok so I havent ripped dvds in awhile started ripping all my tv show dvds for my apple tv. I thought it was odd that my i7 was taking 25+ minutes to rip a dvd when I could of sworn I had done it faster back on my AMD. I figured probably had something to do with the copy protection or whatever. DVD Decrypter was averaging 4-5x rip speed on the i7 within Windows 7 64bit. So im encoding some of the stuff I ripped on the i7 (well ripping more on the i7) I figure ill throw the next disc in the set in the AMD just to check. it rips the whole disc in 10 minutes! 10-12x rip speed! here are the specs of both machines

i7 920 6GB 1600 DDR3
LG SATA DVD-R
Windows 7 ULT 64bit
DVD Decrypter

AMD 64 x2 2.4ghz 2GB Ram
Pioneer IDE DVD-R
Windows xp home
DVD Decrypter

can anyone tell me what the deal is with this? is it the sata vs ide? LG vs Pioneer? Windows 7 vs XP 32bit vs 64bit? so many variables. Also I checked DMA on both machines enabled on both.

I'd put my money on LG vs Pioneer. The LG might come with riplock.

thanks for the reply! that really helped me I had never even heard of riplock. Makes sense tho. I tried using MCSE on the firmware for the drive. However I got the i7 converting awhole season of tv shows via handbrake so i couldnt restart the computer to see if it improved rip speed ill try it tomorrow. Glad I decided to investigate this as im in the market for a bunch more burners so I can make a ton of cds for my band to pass out at shows. Youd suggest pioneer as the best burner to get that will also rip fast?

MediaCodeSpeedEdit seems to be a tool that can add/increase burn speeds, not ripping/reading speeds.

I really cannot make a suggestion about a specific drive, as I am not in the know;I haven't looked on the subject much, and have only used one burner for the past 4 years or so.
on the site I linked you above, if you search, they have some drives rip speed tests comparisons.
If the drive comes with riplock, then the best would be one that can be flashed with a custom firmware that has riplock removed(as I did with my Nec burner when I bought it years ago).

If you're gonna make tons of CD copies, Nero Burning Rom can burn on multiple drives at the same time.

well mcse worked. highest it was getting before was like 4-5x now its getting to 8-9x rip speed. not as fast as the pioneer but still cut the rip speed down from 25-30 min to 12-15 min. Im going to try and find a custom firmware that completely removes the riplock.
