I have been ripping & burning DVDs for quite a while on my HTPC. It's always been fast before, except the ripping has always been a little slow (around 23 min) due to my drive's riplock.

I've always used DVD Shrink & DVD Decrypter with great success, even on my old PC. The other day, I installed DVDFab 7.0.3.0 and it brought the ripping & burning performance to a crawl... even in Shrink & Decrypter.

When something like this would happen in the old days, it was usually the DMA/PIO thing. But this is a SATA drive, not IDE. I'm 99.9% sure that the installing of DVDFab is the cause (since after months of being fast, the slow down occurred at the exact moment I installed DVDFab).

My HTPC is running XP-Pro 32 bit, it's not connected to the web (so no anti-virus, spyware scanners or firewalls), 3GB memory, 1GB 9600 video card, and the DVD burner is an LG 22x GH22LS30 with LightScribe. Oddly enough, the LightScribe hasn't slowed down any, it still takes about 18-20 minutes for a full label (which is what it's always been).

Any ideas about how to get back to the ripping/burning speeds that I had before?

Cheers

I uninstalled DVDFab last night... no change in speed with Shrink or Decrypter.

Did I post this in the proper section? This seemed like it would be the appropriate area.

Cheers

Perhaps DVD FAB installed a lower or upper filter driver and it wasn't removed.
Use IMGBURN to check the drivers installed.

OK, IMGBURN shows the following...

UPPER DEVICE FILTER: redbook
UPPER CLASS FILTER: [None Found]
DEVICE: CD/DVD-ROM Device
LOWER CLASS FILTER: [None Found]
LOWER DEVICE FILTER: imapi

I tried removing both upper & lower device filters, but it wouldn't let me. When I clicked on [OK] to remove, nothing happened. Do you think these filters are what's slowing me down?

I also tried restoring XP to a restore point before the date I installed DVDFab. I haven't tried burning since then, but ripping a 4.3GB DVD still took 45 minutes. It used to take around 15-20 minutes. Before the slow down, I was ripping 8.5GB in just over 23 minutes.

These are standard system entries and should be left as-is.

The system restore is a good idea. It will put back the registry as it was
at the time. That should take care of it. The other thing I was going to suggest
was removing the drive from the device manager and allow the system to reinstall
it upon reboot.

The first thing I did when the slow down happened was to uninstall the drive in device manager. But I didn't wait for it to reinstall on boot-up, I just did the right click--> scan for changes thing. I will try again, and this time I'll let it reinstall on boot.

Like I said, I haven't tried burning since the system restore... just ripping. I have some burning to do tonight. If it's still painfully slow, I may even do a system retore to an earlier date yet (just in case I was wrong about what day I installed DVDFab).

Thanks for your help & I'll post more results when I have 'em.

Cheers

OK, I uninstalled the drive again in device manager. This time, I didn't do the "scan for" thing, I just let it reinstall during boot-up. This didn't fix the problem.

Next, I did a system restore to a point that was 3 days earlier than the last point I had restored to. That did the trick!!! Now I'm back to 23 minute rips & 12 minute burns.

So now all is good, but I'm still left wondering what was actually wrong in the first place. I guess this is one of those times that you just take the result, shrug your shoulders, and move on. LOL.

Thanks for help davexnet.

Cheers

It's hard to say, perhaps FAB installed some other variety of driver,
or made a registry change that affected the system adversely .

Glad to hear you resolved it.
