I have ImTOO DVD ripper right now. I rip the video to standard def AVI and both audio tracks to mp3. I use either AVIMux GUI or Virtual Dub mod to put it all together.

I wind up with a rip that's roughly around 1.5-1.8 gigs. I'm attempting to take the video track minus the two audio tracks to HD (720p-1080P) from a Standard Def and then wrap it up an a nice shiny MKV.

I was thinking H.264 to keep the video small, but have had no luck.

Is this in the realm of possibility,if so any suggestions?

You can change a standard def master image to high def resolution, but it will probably "look like c**p" since your output quality will never be better than the input quality.

You are talking about taking a 480 line image and upscaling it to 720 or 1080 lines.

I mean, what you are doing is technologically possible, but you won't be gaining anything.

Like suggested above, you're trying to make oranges from orange juice. You're not going to accomplish much, especially doing two encodings. Why not convert your DVD source directly to whatever resolution MKV you want?
There are plenty free software that will do that, will be much better than going through an AVI first(however, like you were told, you cannot get better quality than the original).Handbarke(among many others) does a great job, and will include multiple audio tracks/subs.

Piss me off, and I Will ignore You!

So if I rip the standard def DVD with Handbrake, will the resulting MKV be HD? Trying to achieve a HD rip from SD DVD is that possible? Or just pointless? I'll try the Handbrake though, see what happens.

It's pointless. What you think that you are trying to do is just not possible.
