Have a HD that's been dropped, can hear movement inside the unit when tilted now. It won't mount, doesn't even try to spin up. I have tried in a few different systems, Windows and Linux.

My question is, if I get an exact same model of drive, open it, take the platters out from the old unit and put them in the new unit (assuming I find no scratches or gouges in the actual platters after opening), could I possibly recover the data? How likely is this?

Thanks.

yes it can be done as that is how data recovery businesses do it.

Thanks ddp, I'll give it a shot if I can find the same model.
