Okay, here's my current situation. I have a memory card I don't want to lose info from, a spare Samsung 120Gb HDD, a v5 PS2, and a network adapter. From what I've been able to read from here is that a slide tool is the absolutely necessary to somehow loading games off of my HDD (which needs to be formatted before use) without buying overpriced software. I really don't want to sink much more money into this. I've spent over $100 already and I just want to ensure my PS2 new-ish lasts a good long while, hence the HDD boot route I want to take.

What can I do without spending more money, and without using slide-tool?

Before anyone asks, I've read WAY too many stories about a botched ejection using slide-tools to even consider it. Is there a technique I just haven't seen yet? I'm considering HD Loader's successor (HD Advance) but again, it's yet MORE money. I have like, 4 games and I probably won't want more than that so expandability isn't an issue.

Please, I could really use some advice on what my options are from here.

EDIT: Please note, I'm not familiar with the jargon in this community, so if there's an acronym, please spell it out before using it shorthand. Layman's terms will be your best bet with me. ^^;;

If anyone has ANY advice I'd love to hear to. Sadly, most of what I've been reading is from 2006-2007, so I know it's all gotta be very outdated.

Edit: I get that the tuts are as up to date as they need to be, but I'm sure there is new software, better versions, old links no longer work, old sites taken down (like ps2hd). So, I guess I'm just looking for updated advice. Since all the tuts I read are old, all referral and d/l links are broken.

NO MATTER WHAT, you will need a cheating device that can use usb flash drives.

i have yet to install mcfreeboot, because my original independence exploit still works flawlessly on my eight year old v7.

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure

got a whole lot more to list . . .

That doesn't really tell me anything. I just want to know if there's anything I can do without sinking more than around $10 into it. An EVO will run me 4 times that, and Swap Magic 3.6 is "out of stock" everywhere I look (and also more than $30). HDLoader is discontinued, and HD Advance is also too expensive. SO, again, I wonder what other alternatives are available to me on a budget? I've resolved to a flip-top casing, even though I REALLY don't want to have to do it, but a slide tool is just too risky from what I've seen and read. Oh, also, how can I format the drive without HD Advance?

Well if you don't want to spend more to do the exploit.

Then you can either get a volunteer to install fmcb 1.8 to your memory card for you
Or you can use 'PS2 game swap trick' or you can use your 'Hdloader/Hdadvance to isntall fmcb 1.8 to the memory card

http://home.comcast.net/~jnabk3/guides/inject.html

Check the methods under the 'Installation Tab' and also read the User guide

Now to format and copy games to your hdd, you can use Winhiip 1.7.6 on your pc

http://www.console-exploits.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9236

Not sure where u live, but places like gocybershop.ca, you will find Swap Magic or HDAdvance 3.0 for under $25

Hey, Rain. Thanks for that URL.

But, if I'm supposed to already have HD Loader/Advance or something like that, why even use winhiit? Won't it format the HDD for me while it's in the PS2?

Perhaps I should rephrase. There are no practicing modders in this part of the USA anymore (there were about 4 up until 2 years ago). They've all been arrested at least once for piracy and violations against the DMCA. So while I'd LOVE to borrow a hacked memory card, I can't, and buying one for $30 is out of the question. Just not worth it. So, I have a network adapter, HDD, and am prepared to buy a flip-top. Is there anything I can do, with what I have, that's won't cost me anything, that will enable be to back up my small collection of games (and one burned copy) onto the HDD and play them from there so I can keep the discs high up from my 3 year old at all times and not run the risk of her grabbing them because I left them out late last night and she decided to scoop the cat box with my copies of MGS2 and Dragon Quest VIII......sorry. Yes, that is why I want to back up my games this way. And yes, money is a HUGE issue. I want to keep my games safe, keep my PS2 working for a good long while, and not have to worry about the discs getting damaged. Anything relatively new (post 2007)?

Ok well check the Volunteers under the Installation tab in that link I gave you.

There are people near you probably that will install fmcb 1.8 to a memory card, you would then have hddloader installed to the memory card and be able to play games off the hdd.

It only costs you the postage to them and back to u again.

The link I gave you for Winhiip is if you don't have HDAdvance and its actually better to use anyway and faster to copy games that way.

Hey, that's pretty cool! Thanks man. I really appreciate it! I'll go that route, after all they've been doing it for a year and only had one hiccup from what I've read. So that's gotta mean something.

Thanks for the helpful advice, again. Many happy returns!

Yes other than that one hiccup, they are all reputable.

UPDATE!

Well, while procrastinating, I was able to sell enough used DVDs and my old PSX to a friend to justify the cost of Ultimate Swap Collection v2 with overnight delivery AND my external hard drive gave out. SO I cracked that chasis open, removed the dead drive and slapped in my spare HDD. Used WINHIIT to format it and copy my games on to it. Just played a few minutes of Rogue Galaxy and felt all good inside!

The disc arrived about a half an hour ago and I loaded it up to test it out. Great stuff on that disc. A little confused about some things, but hey, for less and 20 bucks, I'm not complaining! No Flip-top or slide tool needed, and no opening the case! It's a little bit of a hassle to take these extra steps, but for my immediate need, I'm not gonna complain. I'll drop more money into this project down the road to simplify matters.

Cool. Rogue galaxy is a good game.

Well thats good it didn't cost you too much at all.

Yes down the road when you feel like it, you could probably install fmcb 1.8 to your memory card.

Then you can just run applications from it.
