Most modchips will be found online. What country do you live in.
If your soldering skills are good, then modchip is always best way to go.

And if its the newest slim PS2 Version 9000x, it is the only way to go or too use Swap Magic. But modchip is better than Swap Magic.

Fully agree go for a modchip. I recently modded a slim and a fat (first time) and they're running like a dream. Have to say that the slim is by far the easiest to do, you can have the board out in under 2 mins. I spent more time on disassembling and reassembling the fat than actually soldering the chip to the board. I found the cheapest sites for good chips are psxbox & eurasia.

I too am in the UK and I got mine alright. It now seems psxbox are no longer, eurasia is your only decent hope though it takes a couple of weeks to arrive from Thailand. If you've no soldering experience I would suggest getting someone else to do it. If you're feeling brave, there is a very good guide here http://soldering.tehskeen.com/ pointing out via's, pads and IC legs which you will be soldering to.
Unfortunately I know nothing of soft mods as I wouldn't fancy disc swapping and the like and from what I've read the boot rate is not 100%. Somebody else may advise you there.

It will depend upon your Version of PS2, to be able to do the softmod or use memor32.

They will not work on SCPH - 9000x models with DAte Code 8c or higher.
