Long story short, when I was small, my dad bought me a pre-modded ps2 fat. Being little, I didn't understand swap magic and modchips and all that, but now, since I get disk read errors while trying to play a backed Rock Band, I'm curious.

PS2 Fat SCPH 30001-R, is the console, and I'm currently cleaning the insides. I'll take some pictures and maybe you guys can tell me what chip I have and how I can fix the disk read error.

1. Legit Rock Band - Disk read error, and freezing if it loads
2. Downloaded GHWT, black screen after PS2 logo, on DVD5, DVD+R at 4x.

Take pics of the motherboard. That is where the modchip will be. It should just say right on it, what type of modchip it is.

You will probably just need to clean your laser, or you may need a new laser.

Try cleaning the laser first.

Do I clean it with alcohol on cotton swabs or just compressed air?

Yep, use Rubbing alcohol on q-tip

Dip it in the alcohol, but not so its dripping.

Clean in a firmly, get gentle circular motion for about 30 secs.
Then take dry end of q-tip and do the same.

You can use the compressed air to clean underneath the laser and your fans etc.

Well, I cleaned it. I tried it with my rachet deadlocked, but now it creates a disk read error. I cleaned the disk but still to no avail. Whats the problem?

I would say you need a new laser. Check Ebay or estartus.com for a new one.

There are other adjustments you can try with the laser, but it only helps for awhile.

I think Rock Band works fine. I think Guitar Hero doesn't cuz of crappy media. Ratchet I have no idea why it doesn't work

To help you understand 'Disk Read Error' in the PS2, you could download this older PS2 repair guide for FAT PS2.

And then if you know your laser is in good condition, there is the problem of media or improper burn.

Like I said I believe your Laser is getting weak, and your probably looking at needing a new one, if the cleaning didn't help much.
