I would say your going to have to open it up and make sure all the solder points are correct on the modchip?

Hey, thanks load for reply's. Already opened up, wasn't chipped by me, conections/solder points look proffesionally done. I wondered if there was another way of finding out if problem is deriving from chip or laser without disconnecting chip?

Hey smokyrain, that looks like a very adequate fuse guide, i shall get on with checking fuses today. Already tried laser voltage with no luck, might give it another go if no luck with fuse testing, or seeming as i havent got the versions spare laser on hand last resort i shall go ahead and remove connections from chip. Thanks loads for your help and the excellent links, v v appreciated.

Wow that is just shi**y luck isn't it, lol. Not funny I know.
Usually it will only stay black for a bit if it can't find a controller.
Now your saying it doesn't even work without the modchip.
Hate to say, but you will have to check those connections again or try another mod chip, maybe it was a bad chip.
I am also wondering did the firmware install ok on that chip.. Maybe you need to try it again. What version did you install.
The new modbo 4.0 can use the 1.99 firmware.
You could read through this thread on psx-scene also about modbo 4.0 on latest model ps2.
http://psx-scene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58538&page=2
Or start a new thread, and show pictures of your install etc.

I know there are different mobo for the V18 PS2 SCPH 9000x models
In that link I gave you for psx-scene, they describe a fix in installing the modbo 4.0 on certain mobo on that model.
That is why I said to check it out or ask them over there. They would know better than me.
I am sure you followed the installation pics, so not sure what happened, or why it would fry the laser.
