Hello all, as you can tell from my (as of this post) 1 post postcount, I am terribly new to this site.
I've read all the rules, and hopefully will not break any in asking for help(or asking in this particular forum), but having searched fairly thoroughly for the past hour or so, and unable to find anything relating to my current predicament. If I am breaking any rules, please forgive me.
----------------------------------------------------------------
So in the following message I shall endeavor to detail as much as as I possibly can.
I'll start with a little back story, which I'll italicize so you can skip through it if you wanna get right to the helping : )
My young sister recently(finally) has come to live with me and my partner after playing up for both our aunty and grand parents. It's what we both wanted in the first place, but CYFS knew better than us of course, and stuck her with them.
After making herself at home, she's gotten her eyes on my old gaming collection, which actually only consists of only my old Sega master System II with 6 games and my clunky fat PS2 with a bit more.
I told her she could use the PS2 is she wanted, but that i wanted to keep my games in good condition, so I'd see about getting it chipped and backing them all up.
So I'm on trademe (which is New Zealand's local equivalent of eBay), and after looking through the various DIY hardware mods, and swapdiscs and whatnot, I find a guy selling memory cards pre-loaded with Free MCBoot, and a variety of different programs, and after asking a lot of questions, and probably not doing enough research, I bought one.
When it finally arrived, I came to the realisation I don't know what the heck I'm doing.
Additionally, she really wants to get one of those pink slimlines, and I wasn't sure which version of Play Station is the best.
So here I am, asking for help, so I can give my darling sister the gaming childhood she deserves :3
And plus I wouldn't mind playing some of these old games once more.
Long story short:
11yo sister now living with me, I want to give her delicious games, but don't want to hurt my precious discs.
Additionally, she really wants to get one of those pink slimlines.
What I currently have is:
-PS2 [V8 - Model SCPH-39002] Fat model
-64MB Free MCBoot mem card loaded with launcers, software and emulators
-Games, both PSX and PS2 (Mainly PSX)
-Darling sister
-A will and desire to learn/get my money's worth out of this stupid memory card.
-A box of snakes (not really)
I have a ton of questions it seems
So I need advice:
-What the heck do/can I do with this memory card?
-All these different launch programs: ulauchELF, ESR, swapmagic(the software is on the mem card, not an actual disc), HD loader, USB loader. Which is easiest/best/fastest?
-The console itself? Upgrade to slim? What are the ramifications of that? (IE: I've heard you can use the PS2 network adaptor to connect an external HDD to the PS2 for faster loading and to be gentle on the laser.)
-How do I play backed up PSX games? I've seen plenty of confusing guides, so I'm assuming it's possible. Is there anything extra I'll need?
-Is there anything I ought to know/might be useful?
I'll welcome any kind of help, be it pointing me in the direction of helpful guides, or holding my hand and guiding me through everything.
Thank you all so much, and I hope I don't annoy anyone : )

Well first congrats on having your sister to live with you.
Second you have a Great PS2 the SCPH 39002
Thirdly fmcb 1.8 is free, and people will install it free, so I hope you didn't pay too much for the memory card, although The 64mb are nice to have. Lots of room.
Ok you can play games off an IDE hdd using the PS2 Network Adaptor
The guide is here -
http://www.console-exploits.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9236
It will explain everything.
Next you could just use esr r9b elf to play backups
Just make a backup ISO of your game using imgburn.
Then patch the iso image you just made using esr disc patcher 2.4a -
http://psx-scene.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=14309&d=1216142349
Then burn the image using imgburn on Good media , such as Verbatim, or Sony DVD-R at 4x speed.
Next you could also use USBAdvance.elf to play games off an external hdd.
I just posted the whole lot of that here, so will save time and just post the link
http://forums.afterdawn.com/t.cfm/f-114/...802819/#4860062
There is also a guide on uLe in that link, to show you the capabilities it has
Also an older guide on using a USB drive, just for some tips or ideas
http://versatile1.wordpress.com/2008/01/12/how-to-boot-games-off-usb-with-ps2/
I have used all the methods above. The hdd's do save space, but I have to say I like just playing the DVD backups with ESR.
Now for PS1 backups, that is where it is nice to have a slim ps2.
With fmcb 1.8 it is easy to play the backups.
Just put in Original PS1 disc at start.
Load uLe by pressing R1 at boot up
In uLe make sure to have 'disc control' set to on beforehand.
Swap the disc.
Go to Filebrowser in uLe,
Then choose Misc.
Then choose PS2 Browser
Your backup will then load.
You do however need to block the sensors in the PS2 slim to do this.
You can just use the 'tape and tissue' method to do this
http://www.geocities.com/pstwoslimline/tapetissue.htm
On your FAT PS2, the only way is too purchase 'Breaker Pro' to play PS1 backups.
Hope that helps you out and answers your questions.
If you have any more, feel free to post.

Oh my, thank you so much!
These guides look far more easier. I had a look at an ESR guide on some wiki, and it was totally confusing. I'll try it all out tonight, and let you know how it worked out.
As for buying her a slim. Is there any versions that will not work with the FMCB card?
And about that, I don't think I paid too much for it. I think it was a little less than store price for a new 64mb card.
Again, thank you so much.

Ok cool. Glad you didn't pay too much.
The only slim fmcb doesn't work on is the SCPH-9000x model with Date Code 8c
You can find the Date Code on the bottom of those PS2.
So it will work on the earlier models of SCPH 9000x and any other slim PS2.

Woo hoo!
It worked, although my import games come out in black and white on the old TV she's got, it doesn't have an NTSC setting apparently.
Could probably pick up a cheap one for $30 or $40 or so though.
Thank you so, so, much.
I'll look into getting a slim too, for PSX games.
Thanks again. : )

Cool, there are NTSC/PAL converters
Not sure how well they work, as I have NTSC, and convert PAL to NTSC
You can use ADR Patcher 0.5 or this converter
You first have to patch the game, then burn it.
I know you can get a Scart cable or RGB converter, something along that line.
For me here I use a PS2 component cable and an HDTV, and my PAL games play fine.
Or yeah, pick up a TV that supports both is good.
