That's what I was trying to do but it doesn't seem to be working. Persona 3 FES is the only disk that seems to be giving me this trouble.

what brand of discs are you using? also make sure the game was completely burnt you may just need to reburn it

Well I can't afford great disks. So I've been using "second class media" as it's categorized. I'm using DVD Decrypter. Do I have to use something else after that before I try and play it?

you could patch your game. with esr you can use esr to boot the game just download from here.
1. patch your game image with the patcher then burn the patched disc put the patched burned disc into the console and play make sure to copy the esr.elf to your memory card if you dont have it there already.

The screen just goes black every time I try to load the ESR. This is really frustrating.

Short tutorial for games:

1. Put your original game in drive and make image of it.
2. Patch it.
3. Burn it.
4. Put it in your PS2 and launch ESR (direct DVD version).
5. That's it!
make sure your esr patched game is in your ps2. your using ESR beta r9b elf with your patched game? if so and still doesn't work make sure freemcboot's configurator has the correct esr path so it boots correctly also i think disc control must be on.(not sure try with disc control on and off) when you go to patch a game it should say patch successful.
