Hi! I'm having some problems with ESR. I installed Free McBoot onto my memory card this morning fine using my PHAT PS2. I tried testing ESR out with a backup of Dragon Quest VIII. I burnt it using ImgBurn at 4x speed on a Verbatim DVD+R disk. So I started ESR and inserted the backup game disk. I forgot the name of the error exactly but after the status showed that it was reading the disk it said sometihng like "Disk not readable", "Media not readable". Some kind of error along those lines anyway. I've heard there could be a problem with the disks I'm using since I'm using a PHAT PS2. I heard PHAT PS2's prefer the use of DVD-R as opposed to DVD+R. Could that be the problem? Please help and thanks for any answers.
Now, my second problem. I burned an .AVI of a movie onto a Verbatim DVD+R. When I start Simple Media System (2.9 Rev 2) and insert the disk, it sits at "Reading" for a while before it says that it is an "Illegal Disk"? Again any help is appreciated.
Lastly, I was wondering about using a HDD for playing games instead of Free McBoot. Is it more useful using the HDD? Faster or Slower? What would I actually need to do this and how would I put games on the HDD? I already have HD Loader on my Memory card. So any info on this too would be great.
Thanks for any help :)

Did you patch the ISO w/ESR disc Patcher GUI v0.24a before you burned the DVD?
SMS: use a Pendrive(FAT32) to save DVDs/CDs (May need USBD.IRX or USBM.IRX on MC).
HardDrive: Need Network Adapter, Harddrive and WinHIIP(for PC)
PS2 FreeMcBoot1.8/ESR & SwapMagic3.8 Coder

I patched the game with the Memento patcher. Is there any difference?
What are these things that you are saying I may need? Are they files? What do I do with them? Also, isn't it possible to burn MP3's and AVI movies to DVD's and CD's and using them like that on Simple Media System?
Does it matter what kind of harddrive I use for the PS2? Also, is it better than using ESR to play backups?
Thanks for the reply :)
EDIT: The exact error I'm getting when trying to play a backup using ESR is "Unknown media in drive". I tried again, this time with Final Fantasy 10. I patched it using ESR disk patcher GUI v0.24a. I burnt it using Imgburn at 4x speed again. I don't see what I'm doing wrong?

I just burned another game using Verbatim DVD-R's at 4x using Imgburn. The game was patched with ESR disk patcher GUI 0.24a again. I'm still getting the same "Unknown Media in Drive" Error. I have no idea what's wrong since I'm sure everything I'm doing is right. Any ideas?

Do you have any problems on your FAT PS2 playing any Original Disks.
What version FAT do you have. Either press Triangle in Browser, or look on the back of the FAT for the SCPH-xxxxx
Maybe your laser needs cleaning or try just using esr Direct dvdv r9b.elf
As for the simple media player, if you going to burn movies to disc, there is a procedure, otherwise its simpler just too put the .avi or divx files on a usb or hdd and watch them.

For the hdd, I like using Seagate, Maxtor. It is actually pretty Fast to load games off the hdd
Tutorial is here - link

I was trying to help, you didn't answer my first questions above.
What version PS2 do you have?
Dragon Quest VIII is confirmed as working with esr r9b direct.elf
If you use DVD+R, just make sure the BOOKTYPE is set to DVD-ROM

Ah okay, sorry. For some reason I did not see the aprt you write above the infomration about the HDD...
The version of the PS2 is SCPH-35003.
Sometimes I am getting trouble running games. I will get the error about the disk not being able to be read properly sometimes, including Swap Magic and backups.
Thanks for helping me with Simple Media Player :) Will try that out.

Well it does sound like you need a new laser. Those Version 4 are pretty old now. YOu can try cleaning the laser CAREFULLY with a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol.
Dampen the swab in the alcohol [make sure it's not too wet] and gently clean the laser in a circular motion for about 30 secs. Use the dry side of the swab to then dry the laser off in the same motion
There is a guide here - link

I'm jsut gonna but another PS2 since I only got this one for £2 and it seems a bit of a hassle.
The SMS thread though, in the bit called "100% working method" When I click on the thread to try it, it seems the threads gone. I'd oprefer making a specially formatted disk for the movies instead of using Swap Magic.

Yeah its probably a better idea to find another PS2
I forgot that forum changed awhile back, so some links are no longer.
YOu can look at post #4 of this thread and use that method
http://psx-scene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52023
Or use esr with sms to play videos.
It really is better I find to just launch sms through fmcb 1.8 and play off the usb or hdd.
The Full SMS user manual is here - link

I'm buying an external HDD soon so I might as well use the method you suggested anyway since it'll be more handy to have all my movies in one place anyway. Thanks alot for the help :)

Just one more question I forgot to ask earlier, using the HDD to connect through the USB, is there any special Hard Drive I need or will any external one work?

I think most External USB drives with their own power source (Wall plug outlet) should work.
For me I use a Samsung 320 gb (Seagate hdd inside) external USB drive formatted as FAT32
Its about 4 years old now.
I know some pen drives also work.

The program (ESR)has 2 options to be installed.
1-Normal Install
2-Multiversion Install
The first is only for work with the ps2 which is installing the program, and only that one.
Second option, is to run the program in any ps2, with your memory card in the socket.
I guess you installed the first option, with a ps2 of a friend, and now, isn´t working on yours.
Am I wrong?
