Hello everyone. I'm new here but I have been searching everywhere and I come across these forums in google search a lot, so I have decided to post. Please read my entire post before responding.
I have just bought swap magic coder 3.8, that came with a CD and a DVD version disks. I have a PS2 Slim 75001 v14, which is said to be compatible with swap magic coder 3.8. Well, I read the instructions I put in the swap magic DVD and it loads up (sometimes not the first time, but I try again) the swap magic coder screen comes up to ask what I would like to do, and the disk stops spinning (I have tape covering the sensors, the disc tray never "opens"). After this screen, I load my Xenosaga DVD Game (RETAIL) into the PS2. When I press X the CD spins at half the rate, which is no way going to be able to read a DVD at that speed. It spins forever, going back to the grey media screen in the PS2 (the one with the memory card) and after a while it goes to "Please insert a valid Playstation 2 game" red screen. The disc never stops spinning until I turn the PS2 off.
Note that all PS2 games play just fine, even the swap magic disc. It's just something about loading it from the disc that causes the problem, it just simply does not spin up fast enough for it to be able to read the DVD.
After some extensive research, I burned myself a copy of "CDLoader" and loaded it though the CD version of my Swap magic disks, and I was able to load the CDloader program, and insert my Xenosaga DVD for it to find the "PS2 DVD". After it finds the PS2 DVD, it asks me to switch game out using EA method, which I just switch my disk into some other game I have burned (I have burned correctly using proper media, I don't think this is an issue, as I cant even load my retail game...) again, it spins at half the speed. Well, It actually spins at normal speed if I open the case, stick the game in, and close the case like you would normally do with any other disc in a PS2, but the CDLoader comes up with an "invalid disc" even if it is another retail game (probably a PS2 checker problem).
Well anyway, the Swap magic CD disc works when loading my retail CD game (some dance game, sucks), but won't boot a burned CD disc most likely due to user error here, But I am not worried about the CD disc.
I am mostly concerned with getting Swap Magic disc working with any disc, even retail because i want to use some cheat codes as well. I just can't get it to load up at a normal speed. On one of my burned disks, I got it to boot up at normal speed but it was just an infinite black screen (might be user error in burning the disks here though)
So before I repeat everything I said again, here's the tl;dr:
My PS2 is a compatible version
I am using a valid copy of Swap Magic Coder 3.8
My PS2 reads DVD's and CD's fine
I am using Verbatim DVD-R media burned at 2x speed and a good rom
PS2 is spinning the disc at half the speed once loaded through Swap Magic
If I can get it to load the retail disc, I'm pretty sure I can figure out how to load a copied disk. Thanks for anyone's help. :)

The Swap Magic Coder 3.8 DVD should load every time. Sometimes you have to make sure it is pressed down on the spindle all the way. Sometimes the discs themselves are faulty and you can get them replaced by your Retailer.
You may also need to clean your lens using a q-tip and Rubbing Alcohol. Clean in a circular motion gently but firmly for about 30 sec. Then using dry end of q-tip, dry the lens for about 6-8 secs.
Xenosaga is a Dual Layered disc and needs a good laser to play. Sometimes just the cleaning will fix that.

Thanks, I never even considered that It could be a bad disc, sense it loads up... But maybe I will try exchanging it. I have cleaned the lazer pretty well so I guess the disks are the only option.

Thats what I would guess. I have had to return them in the past.
My Swap Magic works fine, but I prefer to use fmcb 1.8 and esr r9b to play backups, and I use Codebreaker for cheats if I want them.
I just use my Swap Magic sometimes when esr r9b doesn't work as well.

I had installed freeMCboot onto my PS2 (thru Swap Magic), but for the life of me couldn't figure out how to add the "extras" like cogswap or anything else. r9b plays backups, but you have to install it through MCboot correct? If so, maybe you can explain where I should stick the downloaded file into the MCboot so that it will load this program, or if you know an easy guide. Thanks a lot for all your help :)

I just put all my apps I wanted installed in either the INSTALL Folder, or in the APPS folder inside the INSTALL folder
There is a great guide here showing pictures of how the files would look on your USB drive when installing
http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/fmcb/advanced.php
Another alternative is too add the files now using uLe, as its a Filebrowser for the PS2
Just copy the files from USB to memory card and place them in the BOOT Folder on the memory card.
You can then use the FMCB Configurator to have the files then show up in the Sony Browser so you can launch them
http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/fmcb/config.php
It is under the 'Configure OSDSYS Options' in the guide

Thank you very much!! It worked for me! I booted up my Retail disk, and my DVD+RW disk!! I am so excited, thank you :)
I also installed code breakers, it boots up but I haven't tried any cheats yet. Thanks very much for your help.

Cool. Thats great.
A word of advice though. Even though some PS2 can play DVD+RW or DVD-RW, they are very hard on the laser, and should only be used to test.
Best to just buy DVD+r OR DVD-r
