Region free without swap magic/etc ?

SO heres what I want to do. I want to make my JP PS2 play US games and dvds on it. i have a model BB Pack SCPH-50000 MB/NH which came with a built in HDD and ethernet port. I dont have any kind of swap magic or anything else. I would like to be able to softmod it (or hard mod if its super simple, but i doubt it is.)

Is there anything I can load on to the hdd or usb or memory card to get it open? do i need to format the hdd? it would help me alot if i could figure it out without having to track down a swap magic and just use files.
