I finally got myself a pack of CD-R's. I burned the BIN file from Growlanser Generations onto a CD-R, then loaded up my 3.8 Swap Magic disc. I tried both Normal Boot, and Special Boot. Normal shunts me back to the bios screen, then to the red "you must enter a PS2 game" screen. Special boot makes the screen go black forever.
What am I possibly doing wrong here?

What speed did you burn the CD backup at?
What version is your PS2 FAT? Either Press Triangle in Browser, or look at the back for model number.

Ok I found a disc and made a backup.
I burned it at 16x on Maxell Cd-r, I usually use Verbatim Cd-r, but had a couple of these lying around.
It works fine on my new V18 PS2.
My V7 hates CD's lately, so only use it for the hddloader mostly.
If it still doesn't work, maybe your laser needs cleaning, if you notice you have problems with any other Original or backup CD's.

well, i'm playing my original version of Final Fantasy Tactics, which is scratched to hell, and it's playing fine. Also, DVD-R backups play beautifully when I use my 3.6 Swap Magic DVD. I'm using Memorex discs.

I fixed my V7 today...
At one time before I needed new laser, I had moved the white cog wheel.
So now I have new laser KHS 400Q in it, so I put the cog wheel back to its original place
Anyway the disc played fine now, before it was saying 'insert PS2 format disc' for me also.
Hope you get it too work.

I haven't tried it yet. I just picked up Dragon Age: Origins, and before that i was killing time with FFT, so I haven't been buggered to try it again yet. But I'll be back to post about it one way or another when I get around to it.

So, I finally got around to trying burning the game at 16x, and I'm still having the same issues with loading the disc. Normal Boot throws me back to the bios, and Special Boot sticks on a black screen. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. And I can't find an official Swap Magic forum to ask questions about it. ;_;

the only thing i can think of is maybe my laser isn't very good anymore... I only say that, because I played my retail version of FFX a bit over a month ago, and I remember it loaded pretty slowly. But I don't have the money to shell out on a new laser when I'm not even sure if that's the actual problem or not.
I suppose if I come across another game that requires the CD swap magic, I'll have more definitive information on just where the problem may lay.

Yeah that would tell you if you had other CD backups.
You could try converting CD>DVD if you want and see if that works.
Try using this tutorial here - link
or this one - link
