I have one of every model ntsc consoles ever made and tried to get the swap magic3.3 elf file to work on my memory card. I have free mcboot 1.8 on the card and I installed it the way you would the other elfs which work fine but I cant get this to work it willk start to run but freezes up on the first screen that says Swap magic 3 in big white letters. I tried it on all my systems hoping it was a compatibility issue. I dont know If I got a corrupt file or what. Anyone know where to get a clean file and know how to fix my issue. I do have both swap magic disks but its a pain looking for the cd version to load a ps2 cd backup plus its getting scratched up. I tried cog swap also and cant get that to work ether and these are the only 2 elf files I seem to have trouble with. After configuration they show up on my browser screen on my ps2 ok. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Maybe it is corrupt? Have you tried another Swap Magic ELF file like 3.6 or 3.8?

Yes tried I tried those first. All of them will boot the screen that says what version it is then freezes before the load screen. I also tried different brands of memory cards and I have 1 of each version ps2's and tried each combination with each system of the same region. I even configured a hot key on my controller thinking maybe it was like psxloader as that only works on a boot up with a hot key if thats what its called. I do have original disks to and those work fine. Can I somehow extract an elf from the disk to install on my memory card. I do have the same issue with cogswap but that could be user error as I have no clue how to use that. I just want to boot ps2 cd backups without risking my kid scratching my swap magic.

Nice link thank you. I'll be messing around with this after my son goes to bed. I'll post my results later on.

There is a broken link for a tutorial I wanted to check out in that link bummer. Is there another way to boot ps2 cd backups. I have free mcboot 1.8 and a large collection of elf files which I have no idea what they do.
I have these elfs
cdloader.elf
cogswap.elf
swapmagic3.3.elf
Swapmagic3.6.elf
swapmagic3.8.elf
Driving.elf
Codebreaker9.2.elf and a bunch more but I know what the others do and how to use them. I just need a working elf that will boot cd backups or instructions on how to use one of these to do that. my cd version of swap magic got damaged the other day so I cant boot any back up cd's except psx but I know I cant use psxloader.elf for ps2 stuff. I'm not sure how to use the elf's above or even what they do. cogswap seems to want to work but I put in a ps2 original and tried to use it to boot a backup and no go. I probably just don't know how to use it. I had it configured to boot when l2 was held down on my controller while the console was booting and that didn't work ether. Thanks for your help so far. I'm surfing the net for tutorials and or info right now. I read a tutorial about cogswap and I'm not sure what they mean by title.db and it talks about using ps1 games. I just installed the elf during the exploit but now I think I'm missing some files I need to make it work

Free McBoot is the best method because you can configure it to load any ELF files you want. I used to use Cogswap but has now changed to Free McBoot.

All that title.db and using PS1 games talk is for making a Cogswap & CDLoader CD. You don't need to do that, now that you've got the actual ELF files to load from. But you would need to perform some sort of swap trick if you use these methods though.

You said you have one of every console ever made (impressive!), yet none of the consoles work when you tried to load SwapMagic.elf?

I know Codebreaker.elf contains cheat codes for your games just like SwapMagic, but I have no idea what Driving.elf is.

Have you tried using a program like ISOBuster to extract files from the SwapMagic CD?

I could only get swapmagic.elf to load the first screen using free mcboot 1.8. I'm wondering if I got a pal version elf or something. I haven't tried iso Buster yet but I will for kicks now.
I do have cogswap.elf on my memory card but dont know how to use it. It keeps showing a blue cd image and says ps2 disk or something to that affect. I dont mind swapping if I have to. When I launch cogswap I had an original ps2 cd in my drive and I do have a flip top on my version 10 and just assumed it would load like psxloader.elf but I guess not. All the tutorials I found confuse me because they talk about title db and setting it up and don't say much about how to use it when I am done with my install.
I do have cdloader.elf installed to but haven't tried that yet because I wasn't sure if it was ps2 or ps1. I'll try that to. I still want to get swapmagic.elf to work eventually but if I can boot using one of the other 2 elf's for now to tide me over it would be awesome. Thanks for your help. I'll let you know how things go in my next post.
It took a long time to find one of each version in both pal and ntsc. How I did it was to buy broken systems in bulk to fix and resell and just kept one of each type I came upon. Most ps2's are an easy fix but I had a few that took some learning and getting experience to figure them out. I still got one that starts to load after a new laser install then freezes but I will figure it out.

Nice I got cdloader to boot some cd backup's. I tried cogswap with a cd and configured a controller button to boot it on a reboot and I get a gray screen that says cdvd load or something like that but when my back up boots I get a pink screen with half life. I'm going to try a couple more. Is cogswap for cd backups or dvd backup's.

So you can fix broken PS2s? I had a Fat PS2 that stopped reading discs properly, and would only read one type of disc. Cleaning the laser didn't help for long. How hard is it to replace the laser yourself?

Both Cogswap & CDLoader can load CD backups & DVD backups, I believe. It just depends on which type of original disc you put in first. So if it's a CD backup you want to boot, load an original CD first then swap it for a backup. If it's a DVD backup, load an original DVD first. The important thing is your original disc must have the same size or bigger TOC (Table of Contents) than the backup.

Replacing the laser isn't to bad. You might be able to just adjust the pots. This place sells parts that seem over priced compared to some places but I used there ps2 repair guide to get started on fixing them. There tutorial on the laser replacement and adjustment is easy to follow. http://www.richspsxparts.com/ucgcd.html The guide is $13.95 I will say its worth the cash if you have limited knowledge and plan to fix and sell them though there are a lot of you tube videos on the subject to. Ive seen some free guides but I question weather they were legally posted So I went with this one.
Sorry it took so long to respond I had a birthday and have been side tracked by a red ring of death issue on a 360. There not so bad ether though I'm not sure I'd want to fix those for a living.

Ah..all the soldering and re-wiring stuff are beyond me. When it gets too technical, I wouldn't know what to do.
