Hello. I just got SwapMagic 3.6 and I'm having trouble using it to load Free McBoot. Here's what I did:

I started up my Fat v.4 PS2 with the CD version of SwapMagic 3.6 already in. After I got to the SM screen I used the slide tool to remove the SM disc and replace it with a Philips 48x CD-R containing the Noobie Package from SKS Apps (which installs Free McBoot among other things). I then locked the disc tray back in place with the slide tool. I pressed SQUARE to do a special boot, I heard the disc being read and after a while I got the "Not a valid PS2 disc" error. I pressed X to do a normal boot and I got the same error.

So I switched over to the SwapMagic 3.6 DVD version and tried the same process but with the Noobie Package burned onto a Sony 16x DVD-R and I got the same error. I then tried burning uLaunchELF v4.41 onto a Philips CD-R and tried again with the SwapMagic CD and got the same error. I then tried it with the SM DVD and a Sony DVD-R containing uLE. Still nothing. Finally, I burned a Philips CD-R containing the Noobie Package using my 7 year old desktop running Windows XP SP3 and it didn't work either. All the other CDs and DVDs were burned using my Unibody Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard. I also tried putting the files onto a USB thumb drive with a FAT32 format and SwapMagic never recognized it. I don't think SwapMagic 3.6 can recognize thumb drives.

I searched for the error message online and found this 5 year old post which gives me a couple of ideas to try but I was hoping someone here could give me some more updated information on what's going wrong.

Thank you very much!
Jeremy

With the burning of the discs, it depends upon what format your using in the Mac to burn the CD or DVD

The noobie package needs to be burned in this manner

http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/fmcb/disc.php

And for uLe you need to burn an ISO or CD image of it, such as 4.38 in this thread

http://psx-scene.com/forums/f113/unofficial-launchelf-v4-42-a-37242/

Now for the USB drive as FAT32

you need to make a folder in all CAPS on the root of the drive named SWAPMAGIC

Download the BOOT.ELF of uLe and place it inside the folder

Rename the BOOT.ELF to SWAPMAGIC.ELF

Then also place the FREE_MCBOOT.ELF and INSTALL folder from the noobie package on the root of the usb drive

You can see how it looks in the tutorial

http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/fmcb/swapmagic.php

It should work then

I was able to get it installed using the USB method almost exactly as you explained it. The only thing I did different was rename FREE_MCBOOT.ELF to SWAPMAGIC.ELF. So 3.6 CAN use the thumb drive. Thanks a lot! I really appreciate it.
