Hi. Lately, i've heard about people playing their backed up playstation two games via hard drive, and decided to give it a try.

Following the steps given by Swap Magic, I took my original PS2 games, loaded them into my computer, and installed them onto a hard drive. I then put the hard drive into my playstation (I put two games only at first to test how well it works), and ran Swap Magic. After loading HD Loader on from a USB stick, my games showed up successfully at this point.

When I tried to run Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (one of my favorites), the game ran flawlessly (after a 30 second - 1 minute loading time), and was great to play! Then, i stopped, and tried to run Final Fantasy XII. I threw in the DVD Disc, did the same thing, and the games showed up. I then tried Final Fantasy XII, and the game started loading (with a black screen, and a green stripe in the top right corner). After a couple minutes (5, 10, 20), nothing happens, and the screen is still black, and my night ends in misery.

Then, i tried installing Final Fantasy X, X-2, and other games, with again 0 success.

Basically, what im hoping to find out, is why the dark screen is there, and how i can fix it. Hopefully, its just that im loading it wrong or im doing something simple that can be fixed. I'm not sure exactly what im messing up on :(

Thanks in advance.

Yes some games require you too use Mode 3, by pressing Select on the PS2 Controller as Cybertick said.

And then some games require patches, that you can apply using WinHiip 1.7.6

Scroll down in this link to the bottom to see patches

Then you should be posting in the PS3 section.

but still it must be USBloader that your using, not hdloader then.

See you confuse us, because hdd loader is for an IDE hdd on the PS2.

My PS3 is not PS2 backwards compatible, so not sure on the whole procedure. I just use my PS2 for that.

apologies, ill post in the ps3 section.

To fix what i was saying:

I have a ps2 and a ps3. I'm trying to get things to work on both, and so far the first half of the posts helped me with the ps2 part. Now, ill swap to the ps3 section for the second problem. Thanks tons for the help! Now, at least, my ps2 works. Time for Part 2.

Thanks again!

Ok well sorry about that and good luck with it. If you need more help with the PS2 itself then just post here.

Lots of info on hdloader and UsBloader depending upon which hdd you are using?

I have posted lots of udated info on using a USB hdd on the PS2.

the link you posted has just about every bit of information i could possibly need on the ps2. Just a couple more tweaks and im all set.

Ive been trying to swap it all to the ps3 to make it so i dont have to swap all the time, but it seems the ps2 way of doing it is just 100x simpler. Plus, itll take me a while to get through everything on the site :D

So far, all set. Im sure tinkering with it tomorrow will bring more problems though :D

Hi SmokyRain,

Are you referring to a specific thread with lots of info. on the USB HDD ?

I've recently been acquiring all the equipment required for an IDE HDD setup, as I thought (from what I'd read in the past) this was vastly superior to the USB HDD, in terms of (1) speed, (2) compatibility, and (3) ease of use, with no requirement to "convert" the games to a special format.

I didn't realise that progress is being made with the USB HDD.

I'm surprised to learn that "Time Crisis: Crisis Zone" is listed as being compatible with the USB HDD, but NOT with the IDE HDD :

http://list.sksapps.com/index.php?page=indext.html

I didn't realise there are games that work on the USB HDD, but not the IDE HDD.

You learn something new every day. :-)

OK,

I've come across this thread. This new USB Loader sounds pretty sweet :

Good for you tpb, you found my thread on USB

Yes I actually use both, because some games now work on the USB drive now without patching.

They have more info listed on the psx-scene forum.

I wonder what might be possible with future releases of the new USB Loader application. It's already bearing fruit, even though it's still early days with version 0.41.

Perhaps there's a possibility that a future release might allow PS1 backups to be played from a USB hard drive ? That would be the Holy Grail that has yet to be attained.

I've read it's technically impossible for the IDE HDD (ie, HD Loader) to play PS1 games, because the hard drive controller and the PS1 compatibility engine share the same processing space, meaning only one of these functions can be used at a given time.

But what about the USB HDD ? Does it use the same hard drive controller as the IDE HDD (ruling out any chance of PS1 compatibility), or does it control the disk in a different way ?

ffgriever over at psx-scene has been working on a PS1 emulator for the IDE hdd for over a year now, but still nothing released as yet

It was said at one time in #52 of this faq - link
that ps1 games could be played using USBExtreme.

I have tried with no luck yet, so not sure why that was posted or if it really is possible or not. Most people say no.
