external HDD not playing through usb dvd player

Hi all,

I hope you can help me. I recently picked up a external USB HDD (seagate 500GB 32 gb partition fat32 powered.) to play through my dvd player (onyx sw2300xs)

Thee issue is that the player sees the HDD but does not play avi files. I can play .vob files. The exact same avi files can be played on my 8gb flash drive.

Any ideas on why it doesn't work?
