Maybe trivial, but I had this happening all the time when I first started backing up my dvds. Turns out, I was putting labels on them and those were the culprit. Are you perhaps putting labels on your discs? Also, agree that if you use good blanks you will likely get better results. I have been using Verbatim DVD+R and having very little trouble. Also, some machines don't like the DVD+R discs, so you might try using DVD-R which I understand most machines behave friendlier with if not already using these. Finally, try using a different player, maybe take the discs to a friend's if you don't have another on hand and see if they freeze up the same way. You gotta become a detective of sorts to figure stuff like this out is what I've learned. Good luck.

.-'cos You do not compress the Movie enought.....Try to Compress at 4,300MB or less using Shrink: Re-autor > Compression Settings > Custom Ratio and also helps to untick audio's or subpictures you do not need.
.-Do not Burnning at Maximun Speed.....try to burn at 8x or less.
.-Use a Good Quality Blank Media....
.-Use DVD-R it help alot since they are better that DVD+R
