Copied a dvd to HD. Run Anaysis in DVD Shrink by draging folder into screen. When I go to "backup" - it's asking me - with its promt line to save to a temporary file that I already have. Q) Do I make a new folder for it to save to another copy?
Regardless which way I do it, when I am "enabling" - my small screen is all black. Is this not supposed to be giving me a visual of its activity?

You backup a shrinked copy of the DVD to a new folder or an iso image file;if you wish to burn the files immediately, to an ISO and choose the installed burning program.
I seldom need to conduct an analysis before a backup/shrinking.
The lower pane preview screen should show the video.
Possibly another video renderer should be selected.

OKAY! So far, so good! Got her goin' I had to provide a NEW folder for it to go into.
The blank screen eventually started to produce images.
Q) Why does it "ENCODE" different DVD's at different speeds?

The larger the original, the more processing is required to fit into the space allocated for the output.
If you were to 'Re-author' and only select the main title it would be a smaller source and would take that much less time to fit.
If the source was smaller than the selected output size (example is perhaps a TV episode disk like the Simpsons where you elected to 'Re-author' and selected one episode) then no compression takes place and the file is simply output without processing.

OKay - so much for that. I guess that makes sense.
Slowly catching onto this stuff. I've sucessfully managed to do 3-4
DVD's.
Q) Sleepless In Seatle is just HUGE. The compression is almost 54%. However, I see that ther is two versions of it on the same disk. i.e. Full screen & wide screen. I see the "main menu" but what I can't see is how to dupl. just on version or the other. That should cut my compression way down. Is that possible.

I'm not sure, as I haven't seen that type of DVD - but with an episodic disk (Columbo) I selected the second title and replaced it with a still image.
It takes up less space and it allows the menu to function.
See if that works.

yEA! I saw that "single image" listing earlier today, but there is only a whole string of file names. I guess what I'll have to do is play each one individually to try to figure out where the break is.

I sure hope no one is offended by all of my dumb questions.

What is causing a playback toeither skip or lockup?
Is the signal being burned too fast?
Will SLOWING down the burn help to remedy this?

If the problem is only evident on the burned disk, ensure that you use known reliable disks (Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden are the easiest to find) and burn them at a moderate speed (half the maximum shown on the package).
Arguably the best burning program is ImgBurn.
If you have the correct version of DVD Shrink and ImgBurn has also been installed, DVD Shrink will offer to burn the disk using ImgBurn when you click 'Backup'.

Till now, I have been using FUJIFILM disks.
Strange, qwerky things aeem to happen lately though.
The LARGER the compression, the more stupid things get. Two of my burns open 100%. Ten, all of a sudden the credits show up. However, the fils on the computer playback - fine.
Q) After I have ANALYSED the original(s), a new file has appeared on the HD. What type of file is this?
Q) Is the sequence in which I transfer them back into the SHRINK software important?

I don't know.
However trivial sized files are saved for each analysis - they are consulted to see if a loaded file has been previously analysed.

What files are you referring to?
The procedure for backing up DVD's should be.
Rip with the likes of DVD Fab or DVDFab HD Decrypter or Any DVD.
Scan the ripped files using FixVTS (removes any garbage that the ripper missed).
Shrink the files
Burn to quality blanks, at moderate speed using ImgBurn.
Known quality disks are the ones I mentioned.
Most disks (even with familiar names) are made in different factories by whoever is contracted to make them.
Your disks may be good quality - but unless you know the manufactures ID code (hidden on the disk), you cannot be sure.
You cannot always trust the brand name on the package.

Apparently, I had already downloaded, ImgBurn. Just hadn't installed it.
You know, it's all - live & learn. I - earlier today backed up my GLADIATOR, DVD. Went to play it on my stationary playback unit and it skipped all over the place. Just before I decided to throw out the disk and try to burn it again, I tried it on my computer.
MY dual-layered DVD drive - plays it back properly.
Just goes to show you that these cheap home units are not worth C_&$!
I have ImgBurn installed, now to try to get into it.
thanks again.

Imgburn will tell you the Manufact. ID Code of your Disc, so there is no Reason to Download DVD Identifier.
Try Burning the Disc at 1/2 the Rated Speed of the Blank Media. Also Change the Target Area to 4300 in Shrinks Prefs

It seems that if I recall when I first started to burn CD's - way back when - that I had to drop my burn speed down - even back 10 years ago - or so. Nothing's changed! LOL

Thank you ALL for offering so much help. It really helps things along - quickly.
Made a BURN with NERO EXPRESS ESSENTIALS. The DVD copied at 4X - FLAWLESSLY. Except that about 30 minutes into the playback, the audio went south for the remainder of the time. I tried to playback the NERO disk in the computer would not recognize it at all.
I'd dragged the shrunk copy (folder from the HD) to the NERO burn area. Set it for 4X. BTW, the quality of the print was awesome.
any suggestions

So,if I'm catching onto this, please advise ... if I have a DVD content that is larger than the 4.7GB allowed - DVDShrink will compress it's content to fit. I see a sliding bar that gives me the amount of compression indicated in percentage.
Q) What is an acceptable percentage of compression?
Q) What if I use a DVD+RDL?
Q) Will that eliminate the need to compress?
