Hi,
I tried finding a thread for this but just couldn't.

I have been backing up DVDs i've bought for many years using Shrink and DVDFab but for the last 3 weeks both programs crash mid read.

Sometimes they read the disc and then crash in the burn process, sometimes they just come up with error messages.

Can anyone help?

For old movies you can use DVD Shrink Only....
But for new releases: You do not need to update DVD Shrink (last update 2004). But for sure you need to keep your DVD Fab up to day most of the time and also keep reading new threat postings too....like this one:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/t.cfm/f-125/leap_year-849447/

DVDFab is up to version 7.0.5.5 already
http://www.dvdfab.com/en/hd_decrypter.htm?vid=avangate&aid=675

Any DVD is on 6.6.4.2
http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html?aid=50081

Hope this help.

Unfortunately I'm up to date on the software, but they still won't copy as they used to.

Ok

If your can't burn, but your programs never crash......can be your Burner or media.
But since your programs are crashing.....then is your PC.

To start:
Make sure you PC is not over heating.
Clean your Laser with a CD-DVD Lens Cleaner several times (3-5).
Keep your Burner Firmware up to date:

Not at the moment because DVDFAB 7 has started to work again.

I will try a burner clean up, but this wasn't just happening on one machine and DVD Shrink won't burn on either machines.

DVD Shrink Program do not have a Burn Engine....it work as a Rippers for Old Movies and today is use as a Transcoder.

http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/term.cfm/transcoding

If you been burning DVD's before is by the auto-burn help of Programs like Nero or DVD Decrypter.
ImgBurn is the upgrade of DVD Decrypter.

Downgrade your Blank Disc Media from +R to -R.

Hope this help.

windoze has added some new drm crap.. I had to reinstall it on my vm last weekend because it refused to burn with anything saved from a device to a disk.. bag of crap that it is I need it for certain fone and map software..

be aware it looks to me (with nothing more than guesswork) that there is a licensed only media to disk function being implemented.. the same crap didn't happen with puppy linux (which has a notoriously bad and buggy data burner).. beware of hidden drm with windoze people.. strange things are going on that even skilled mofos like me are puzzled by..
