I've got a number of DVDs (e.g. The Tourist, Babel, Crash) that have foreign language parts and no matter what I do, I cannot get subtitles to appear when I re-author with DVDShrink. I've found several threads on subtitles - and I'm pretty sure I'm following the instructions - but I cannot get it to work.
I am using the latest version from this forum (3.2.0.15). Here's what I do :
- I go to re-author mode and copy just the main movie part.
- I ensure that the sub-picture part for the foreign subtitles is checked (confirmed it's the right stream by checking what windows media player is playing on the DVD).
- I right click on the main movie in the re-authored pane, choose "Select default streams" and choose "display the following subpicture stream" - and ensure it's the stream I selected
- For audio, I choose just the 5.1 English option
- Then I click backup
I then rename my .vob to .mpg and try playing it - but it simply never shows subtitles. Not on my popcorn hour, not on windows media player. Even if I select the entire subtitle track - so that subtitles should be shown for the whole movie - I still won't get any subtitles.
Any ideas? It's driving me mad, since it means quite a few rips have fairly useles portions in them.
No, the ifo files are neither useless nor do they contain the subtitles. Subtitles are stored in the VOBs and referenced from IFOs. What's useless is a player like popcorn hour that does not support a video DVD structure or is there another reason you renamed VOBs to MPG?
The renaming to mpg was from before I had the popcorn hour and was for when I used a PS3. Since I was unaware that was causing a problem I had no reason to change. In addition - since I use YAMJ, I was naming the mpg files so that YAMJ could find the movie details. However - after some additional research last night, I now know thats not necessary if I copy the video structure into a named directory.
