I'm trying to fit a DVD9 file, which is around 7GB, onto a DVD5 disc. Which program will result in a better quality, DVD Shrink or Clone DVD?

Thanks in advance.

Okay, thanks. So if I use either programs, will the quality be really pixelated compared to the original?

Is that just the main movie, or the entire DVD is 7GB, with extras, menus and stuff?

It depends what TV size you're gonna watch it on, what movie it is(if it has lots of action scenes or dark ones, that's where you'll notice more the lower quality). Disable any audio tracks that you will not be using, will save you a few MB. I would even cut the end credits, some of them go forever and ever taking space.

Or, use DVD Rebuilder (I never used it, but it seems that's what people use around here for high rate compressions)

This statement is true as long as the DVD is more than 4300 MB. However, the question that you are asking:

Then the answer is, if you want to use a transcoder, then it really doesn't matter. Both will end up with the same result. However, as cyprusrom indicated the end result will be better with using DVD Rebuilder because it is an Encoder and not a Transcoder.

The only way to be certain has to do with the size of the TV you are viewing and if the DVD has a lot of action.

You may download DVD-RB for free, but you will still need an encoder. DVD-RB does come with a free encoder, and it is a nice piece of software if you do not have a better encoder available.

You may download DVD-RB from here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_...d-rebuilder.cfm

For some reason the RB site is not working. I'll have to get in touch with the owner.

Edit: jdobbs has another link available at: http://www.jdobbs.com/Pages/Downloads.htm

I would suggest downloading DVD-RB from the second link.

As mentioned, DVD Rebuilder is the way to go and as syxguns posted it includes a few encoders with it the best being HC Encoder. Unless it is a project I am doing for someone else and I am in a hurry, I never even use DVD Shrink anymore, I just stick with rebuilder. You will not be disappointed. But as per your original question regarding Shrink or Clone, Shrink wins my vote for it is FREE.

Using DVD RB takes a lot of time. I normally run the batch mode option and have at least three or more to do at one time. I then start it as I go to sleep and when I wake up the completed movies are done.

There are many threads that talk about the difference in encoding vs. trancoding. Here is one: Link

I agree with this statement as well. In some cases you may need to run the file through VobBlanker before you process with DVDShrink. DVDShrink is not updated and therefore can not handle newer encryption as well. VobBlanker is a free utility, and it seems a little confusing at first if you are going to clean the files. However, you may just process the files to acquire nice clean DVD Structure.

If you want to go into detail with the program you will need a little guidance. Here is a guide written by one of my buddies alkohol: Link

Just a comment on the original question. This goes back to the question, free or retail? Both CloneDVD2 and Shrink are decent programs. It takes a discerning eye to see the difference, even on a large screen monitor. Keep in mind that Shrink's decryption software is outdated. It's main purpose nowadays is editing and transcoding. Shrink's quality settings do well at higher compression. As others have said, an encoder is going to do better than a transcoder. DVD Rebuilder is time consuming. Take that into consideration. The retail apps have trials. So take some programs for a test spin. You'll need AnyDVD to go with the CloneDVD 2, or the free DVDFab Decrypter.
