Ah, the hdparm command, know it well, always had to re-enable DMA on a burner at work, it was a TinyMe machine, DMA would drop off randomly (and without even being used). In the end i cheated and knocked up a noddy crontab to detect if DMA dropped off then just enable if it had.
I might see if i need to reapply the chipsetdrivers on my main machine to sort out the DMA on the SATA drives, though i'm tempted to leave it be as everything 'just works'.
@ creaky :)
i woulbn't worry my head over it if i were you
i thought dma didn't apply to sata either. this is my first brand new bits rebuild for myself.(how long we been at it ??? he!he ) all 3 drives...mobo...cpu (the only old is the hdd) it all works well no burn probs so...if it aint broke leave it alone :)
I totally agree, it's just my curiousity, i bought the Quad machine 2 years ago now, and at some point the motherboard died (MSI). Then i got the Gigabyte board that's in my signature. I don't bother reinstalling XP or anything, i just fired up XP and everything worked, it detected the odd driver and whatnot, and it's stayed like every since (well apart from a reinstall of XP 'over the top' the other week). Everything works 100% and as far as i can tell the various drives all run fast enough, but i can't remember if i ever installed any Gigabytedrivers. I'll probably break something but i am just curious now, being as i can't remember what i did reinstall driver-wise.
I am having problems with dvd shrink also, when I open shrink, the select backup target is hard disk folder instead of a dvd burner and has a message to enable burning, please install Nero, which i have - Nero9. but it still comes up not seeing a dvd burner
I need help!!!
Just upgraded to win7x64. Shrink seems to analyze ok and put files into a folder but can't find Nero 9 to burn. I keep getting a message saying "you need Nero to burn" (or something like that). Shrink also isn't finding my burner. It shows the 'backup target" as my hard drive instead of the burner. Would using x64 system cause that problem? I can open Nero manually and burn but it is a pain.
