I'm going to be 100% upfront and say I'm very new to DVD copying, but recently I found it necessary to begin to create back-ups of my library. I've been able to use DVD Shrink and create an ISO file of my movies. From there, I simply burn the ISO file via Nero 9. The problem I am having is the quality of the video. It's resolution is noticeably worse than the original DVD.
From what I have read, DVD Shrink compresses DVDs to fit on a 4.7GB disc, whilst most DVD movies are manufactured on 8.5GB dual layer discs. I want to find a program that will decrypt & encode, all the while retaining the best quality of the original DVD. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Many people strip all the extras out of a commercial disc and only put the main movie file to backup disc. Smaller file to compress/shrink = less artifacts on backup. Or if it is a bigger file needing more compression, as attar said, many (myself included) use DVD-RB because it does a better job at higher compression settings
Another alternative is to split the movie onto two regular disks. You can do this easily on Shrink using the choose chapters function (the little box in the center). I usually do this if the film is going to compress below around 80 percent - that's about the point where I start to notice the difference in quality.
Or, you could just set the compression to "no compression"...it will give you an error about it being too big for a 4.7 disk, but you can still output to an ISO or a VTS folder, and use one of many freewares to burn from there.
I'm another one that will heavily recommend Dvd RB for higher compression needs. Sure, it will take a little bit longer than Shrink, but then end outcome is far superior IMHO.
