I booted up my main movie machine (the Quad Core) with a linux live cd as it was easier than using Windows crappy search function for finding the files (could have used a dos session i suppose, but that's also crap compared to a linux find command). Just trying to keep my grey matter sharp :)
Anyways, most of the files are present on my machine ~ results

I have XP Pro, and am up-to-date on ALL MS updates, and guess what, Shrink 3.2 runs just like it always has with no problems. Oh, and I have never run vbrun60sp5.exe.
BTW, I never run Shrink, but did just for a test, however hearing about this thread I decided to see if it was true about what "diarbe" indicated, and at least on my system it is not true.
Best regards.

Thanks, it's sounding like the VB runtime files aren't relevant then..

Thanks for the info. But I was merely experimenting. I generally run Firefox. Though I wish it ran as quick as Google chrome. Perhaps after a few more releases.
To delete, or not to delete. THAT is the question!

My experience with Chrome as been just the opposite. I have 30-40 tabs in Firefox, and only 5 in Chrome, and Chrome for some reason seems to take forever, but it could be the sites I'm going to, Zillow, Mapquest, Photobucket, Home Depot, and a realestate site.

It might be more the case that older movies do not contain encryption in the first place. I personally don't have the time or access to enough older movies to prove the point, but perhaps you should try a few old ones with DVD Shrink and don't have Any DVD running in the background. If they are not encrypted, no problem . If they are then it would be good news to me if it did decrypt them for you. How would you know anyway? I've never really tested the info that I got from somewhere on the net back in some dark age I guess... LOL I'd be interested in how many of your burnt DVDs play in various DVD Players when you don't use ANYDVD in the background... For sure the later DVDs need the AnyDVD running behind DVD Shrink.
BTW - Do a search for vbrun60sp5.exe in Google... There are several download points.

I and others know, that's why, we do old and new films alike, with and without AnyDVD

No, that's blatantly obvious, however you've come here preaching that we all need Visual Basic 6.0 SP5 run-time files. As we've proven in the above posts, it's complete hogwash. I gave you the benefit of the doubt, what a waste of time that was, as proven in the aboce posts.

Again, i and other regulars have no playback issues or any other issues.

Oh really ?, how come my stuff works when i don't even have AnyDVD, eh genius ?.
Originally posted by diarbe: BTW - Do a search for vbrun60sp5.exe in Google... There are several download points.
And yet you're still wasting forum space posting the exact same incorrect load of old rubbish.

You might be right too. I did after all stuff up my windows installation and had to reinstall. It is possible that you already have the files and that they came from "somewhere"... I don't know if they are in the XP installation... Maybe you know better?? I just found I didn't because when I installed the exe I have mentioned, DVD Shrink worked again. So either running it over-writ a corrupted file or put one in that was missing. I was just pleased that I got DVD Shrink running. For those who are running DVD Shrink ok, there would be no point in running the vbrun60sp5.exe again. If you know a way of determining that it was *not* one or more files in the package that worked, then I would be interested.... unless I unconsciously said a magic word or something.... :) maybe I swore....

How about you actually read the above posts where i and others spent time investigating your 'theory'.

There is no need to be so rude creaky. The information I gave was to help others. Not necessarily you.
Obviously you have a player that doesn't balk if there is an encryption present. Some brands do that. But how would you know? If you can do old and new ones and have no trouble, Good luck to you. What's the big deal?
No. I was not preaching anything. I offered that the files in vbrun60sp5.exe must be necessary to run DVD Shrink or mine would not have worked immediately. If you can prove, or need to prove otherwise then go for it, I would be interested in what you come up with. If he information was not useful to you, so what? Are you lonely and disliked by everyone that you should attack anyone who wants to be helpful? (And by the way... Whether you think I am or not is really not relevant.)
I am pleased you have had the time to talk with all the other regulars... I guess what your saying is that this is a competitive site and I shouldn't rain on your parade? Well that is fine for me... As if with an attitude like yours anyone with half a brain would want to be taking advice from you anyway. You are just so unpleasant. Why don't you take some medication or something?
Thanks for the compliment. But clearly you know more about being a genius than me... If afterdawn.com and its public approves of people like you, I don't need to be here do I? Bye now clever little man. Don't choke on all that power...

Sorry if you find it rude. I'm just irritated that you're still spamming a few threads on this theory of yours. Now there's nothing wrong with anyone having a theory, and it's not like you're here pushing some paid for product else you'd have been removed already. The VB run-times are benign, it's simply that despite a few of us taking the time to check out this theory (and proving it wrong) you're still defiantly posting which is in effect incorrect information. If anyone ever points out mistakes in my info i acknowledge it immediately. And that goes for any Moderator decisions i make. As for me i certainly don't know everything, far from it, i just research most things for myself.

I've already told you how i know. Please re-read my previous replies. The only big deal is you won't read what has already been posted and keep asking how i/we know.

Why is it that people who come to forums, then have their advice/information questioned, resort to the tired accusation of power-mad or lonely inadequate stereotypes. I hate to disappoint you but i'm neither. I will admit to being here a lot so for that you can label me however you like.

I requested suggestions in two different threads (you can check where and what i posted via the search button) where a group of longterm movie types frequent, how else to prove (or disprove) something ?. You think we should just take anybody's word for something on a forum just because they say it's true ?. You should go back and re-read what i said in my first reply on this subject and why i got others involved. I didn't think it was a valid theory but i gave you the benefit of the doubt. It matters not whether it's right or wrong as you're only suggesting something benign like common or garden VB run-time files. But you think i have an attitude and am unpleasant because i'm irritated that you posted a theory where we took the time to consider it and post an outcome, then found it to be irrelevant/incorrect,and you continued to debate it without reading what we'd written. Ah, medication, another stereotypical retort when people are disagreed with on forums. And as per my first paragraph, anybody is more than welcome to 'rain on my parade'.
Originally posted by diarbe: Thanks for the compliment. But clearly you know more about being a genius than me... If afterdawn.com and its public approves of people like you, I don't need to be here do I? Bye now clever little man. Don't choke on all that power...
If you take the genius comment in context with everything else i've responded with in this and previous replies you'll see it's dry humour. Call is sarcasm if you will as that's what people usually confuse with dry humour. I could care less for power, how can i care about power when (for example) i graciously accept correction and/or criticism ?.
Anyways, to sum up, if anyone wants to install VB run-time files that's up to them, but if you're going to keep posting it in threads you need to be more clear where you post it, for example you posted it here ~ http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/812453/4912072 where it was completely and totally irrelevant. And here ~ http://forums.afterdawn.com/t.cfm/f-125/...nk_2009-810240/ where it was absolutely nothing to do with the poster's problem burning the DVD (and in fact from the thread title of that one it appears to be a fake version of DVD Shrink).
Now hopefully this thread can get back to the original topic.

Actually, the last time, previous to to my test yesterday, I did a re-author of two movies, and as usual it worked flawlessly, and that was about 2 months ago. In fact, that is about the only case I ever use Shrink.
Edit: I forgot to mention that there was NO encryption on the movies.

I don't see why any visual basic crap would be required. If it is, usually the application drags it down or whines about lacking a dependency when it's installed anyway.
Anyhoo.. it's been an interesting investigative process. If by going off topic peeps learns stuff about what is where and what things may or may not do then it hasn't been a waste of time.

diarbe,
No offense, but when you want to contribute to threads like these, it helps to ask, rather than tell. Had you simply asked if others had had, the same experience, it wouldn't have come across like you knew it all. Your comments to creaky are uncalled for and totally unappreciated by all the members here, myself included!
I've been at AD for over 4 years, and I learned not to be so sure of myself, because it creates totally unnecessary arguments like this. I've been at computers for over 20 years, and I don't know it all. There will always be folks out there with the knowledge to be able to give the right answers to help solve others problems, when asked. If you want to learn from the best, you are in the right place!
Creaky's background in computers is one of the best on AD. If you can't understand or respect that fact, then take a hike, because we want people here who collectively help others, help solve their problems. While you thought you discovered a problem and a cause, others have proven your theory wrong, myself included. No one got in your face, at least until you started acting like a baby and started firing pot-shots at people with far more knowledge than you. You need to grow up and learn some respect!
Respectfully,
Russ

Almost all the information you have posted is BOGUS.
Most of the above posters started out using DVDX Copy and gradually progressed as better decrypters came out. ALL our discs played just fine before The Cadillac of decrypters, AnyDVD, came out. And some people have never used AnyDVD and rely on Free DVD Fab Decrypter.
Just because your "theory" proved wrong, you don't need to have a pissy fit. You post bad info here and you will be called on it, no matter who or how smart you are- be ye Addict or Newb! Creaky deserves an apology.
