About half the time I use it DVD Shrink produces DVDs that play fine on the computer but in a DVD player they skip the DVD menu and jump directly into the movie, often near the end. Trying to select 'Menu' on the remote just restarts the playback from the same (wrong) point. The DVD is essentially unusable. No special burning options have been selected. What do you suppose is going wrong here?
I use DVD Fab 8+ to write the DVD contents to a hard drive, then DVD Shrink to shrink, and Nero of course to burn.

since when does shrink allow you to keep the menu so in that respect looking for it is a waste of time,if you want to keep menu rip with dvd fab, drop video folder on to menu shrink, remove the menu shrink created folder from within the video folder to outside, shrink movie with fab, then burn folder with dvdfab (left column=more=write)or nero
menushrink is free-it removes the animation so now the menu is still,it can save anything from 0mb-700mb

Huh. When I use DVD Shrink to shrink DVD files ripped to the hard drive and it works, the DVDE menu structure is intact and it all works fine, so I believe that is a feature of DVD Shrink. Something else seems to be going wrong now with DVD Shrink, and it is happening on two different computers.

post link to your version of shrink, you might have to use FixVTS on the video before shrink can process it,i assume your using full backup, totally forgot that option is there,if worse comes to worse use dvdfab

Why Use Shrink at All, Since You Are Ripping With DVDFab Just Select "DVD 5 Qualiy"
And/or Try The Customize Option In DVDFab. Instead Of Useing NERO Try Burning With Imgburn at 1/2 the Rated Speed of Your Blank Media..

I just use the free DVDFab version to rip, but I don't think it can shrink and burn, so I use DVDShrink for that.

Good media like Verbatim is essential as well as a reliable burn program. I had about a 50% coaster rate till I got rid of Nero that was about 8 yrs ago. Try shareware imgburn if you burn a coaster with Nero and burn at a slower speed than the speed of the Nero burn. After a while you will never burn a video with Nero. Nero forces you to burn too fast. With imgburn you pick your speed you can burn at 1X using 32x disk if you want. That is the way I like to do things, I tell the computer what to do, not the other way around. Also after you rip with defab, run fixvts on the files before you shrink them. My backups are superior to the originals as far as skips. I probably have less than a 1% coaster rate.

Mez your first 6 words say it all apart from having a decent burner, however regarding comments on software i totally disagree as the disc determines what speed you burn not even imgburn can help there it's own log window shows that, not sure what you mean by nero forcing as i've never come across that, you select what burn speed is used the default however is max from nero 7 +,again you are able to select the speed so long as disc allows it

What does this mean? Discs don't allow anything. The burning app does the allowing. Since I haven't used Nero in a VERY long time and MAYBE things have changed but I doubt it.
Can you burn at 1x or 50x for any disk? If not, I have made my case.
What is the speed range Nero will allow you for a 16x disk, if I may ask?

nero 7 onwards the setting as far as i can remember was set for maximum burn unless you chose otherwise, certainly is the case for nero 10,nero 6 if i recall correctly always selected the last burn speed i think,5.5 nero can't remember
Discs are restrictive, the verbs you speak of can usually be burnt at any speed, verb 16x in nero start @ 2x & go up to 16x in 2x increments, older discs tho not specificaly verb start at 1x & csn be burn't a such, some discs are rated for only two speeds say rw media, imgburn & nero will only allow those speeds, that means there must be something on the disc that tells the software what it can & can't do,totally unrelated to discusion..lol..dual layer media is a whole diff kettle of fish that's best burnt at slow speeds real slow, well for games anyway i've seen comments regarding some saying 8x verb dl can be burn't at 8x,however i've found this is untrue & you will get read errors & nup my hardware is reasonably late especially the dvd drives, never more than a year old,ok maybe two hehehe

OK 2x for 16x is reasonable. I will take my scaith on Nero back. There was a time when the slowest you could burn was half the rated burn speed. Well they finally got that right. I still prefer a wide range of burn speeds. Imgburn does 1,2,3,4 for any speed disk. You can burn a 16x at 1x. I don't know that that would be smart, the pits would probably touch. I burn 16x verbatim at 3x. I bet you can't do that with Nero. The dye they use has a wider burn speed range than the lesser brands. Those do better closer to their rated burn speed. The problem is you get coasters all too often. I used to burn a great deal of disks so I got it down to a science.

One of my players a very old expensive Sony can only read perfect disks. It will not even read many new comercial DVDs. It will only read the back ups if they are perfect. For me, a wide range of slow speed settings speed settings are all important. I can tell the difference between 2x,3x and 4x.

I don't have any standalone dvd players for the very reason you describe about your sony, even in these forums they all say the same thing, comp plays it fine the dvd player doesn't,it's the reason i use the comp as my entertainment system coz i know it will play it regardless, well unless the disc is really badly scratched, there's just something about stand alone's that they don't seem to read as good & in this day & age there's no excuse for any player not to read all formats dl media apart from using crappy discs of coarse

You may get screwed if I am guessing right about an old protection scheme that is starting to hit home. They are now selling bad pressings that are so bad, computer readers can't read them. The old expensive players can't either but the cheapie ones from China can.

@ Mez and ScorpNZ
I burn my DVDs(Verbs,TYs,Sonys and OfficeDepots) at X12 & X16. I don't have problems with Nero 8 or ImgBurn. I can burn 3 at a time with Nero B Rom X16 no problems-even going back to 6.6.0.18. Newer media is meant to be burned faster than 2X or 3X. Neither program ever forced me to burn at a speed I did not want. I agree tho that Nero does NOT give a full range of speed options.

I already retracted my statement. 2X on a 16X is reasonable. Maybe you have a better burner or player than I do.
