I backup my movies by ripping the full disc with dvdfab hd (freeware with latest updates). I then run the movie through Fixvts. Next I use DVDSHRINK to re-author and shrink movie only. Lately it is taking about 40 plus minutes to analyze and encode a movie. I'm getting frames of about 3,500 kb/s and buffer of 50 - 75 MB during encoding. Can someone give me some ideas of what I can check to see if I have accidentally changed something.

I have ripped and burned lots of discs and it has never taken this long. I have checked the dma mode on my primary channel and have defraged the drive. Any suggestions?

Are you multi tasking while you are running shrink? Sounds as if you have a few programs that are taking up some of your power, forcing shrink to run harder.....and cause the buffer to increase dramatically.

I don't do anything when I am backing up discs. I just walk away from the computer and let it do its thing.

Additional info: I rip with a samsung external burner through 2 usb ports; then use the cpu for fixvts and dvd shrink. Would that make a difference?

Anything I need to check in the way shrink is setup?

Sounds normal to me. Depending on the file structures, a small file can take a long time and a larger file can zip right through in minutes. Some movies takes longer to process, that's just the way it is. Not to worry.

@Musicdawg,
Do you have Shrink set up to run the files through Deep Analysis before transcoding? That can cause the process to take longer.

I will double check to see if i am running a deep analysis. What are the arguments for or against running the deep analysis? Is it just preference? Is the quality that much better?

Just curious!

Thanks for the comments!
