Hello everyone. I am new to AfterDawn but this is the only place I could find that has any information regarding my question or close to it. So enough of that and on with it.

I have been using DVD Shrink for quite awhile and I do have the newest version. Recently after reading and researching for countless hours I decided that it was time to get rid of my massive DVD collection but I want to keep the movies, so the tedious task of converting has begun.

Now with that said I have hit a road block, and a major one. I am currently using DVDFab 6 to rip movie to hard drive and Format Factory to then convert to format I wish. When I rip a non copied disc (original movie) it works without any issues what-so-ever. When I try and rip a movie that has been shrunk by DVD Shrink there seems to be issues. DVDFab still works the same, as it will read the disc and choose just the movie as I want, then when I start the ripping process it goes about 30% or so and then just stays there. The counter for how long its been running is still on so it's not freezing up. It seems that around the second file of the movie (example: vts-10-1.vob, vts-10-2.vob) it just stops. I thought it was DVDFab and tried several other ripping tools to no avail.

I just need to know if there is something that is not allowing for this to happen. I know this may be a strange question as the reason you use DVD Shrink is to put DVD9 into DVD5.

Thank you ahead of time for all of you that take the time to help me if there is something that can be done.

Just a thought. Sound like you're at the beginning of a massive project. How do you plan to save room? Are you sticking with mpeg2/DVD but going to dual layer? DIVX/XVID? Compressing to H264 for some eventual use on Blu-Ray?

I recently encoded about 60 shows of an old TV show to H264 using mp4 thinking that I could eventually fit 3 seasons on 2 Blu-Rays. Of COURSE, I thought, these files should play on Blu-Ray. Nope. Most don't play data disks and the PS3 which plays mp4 doesn't support the 5.1 CH audio I used. Duh! I'd have to encode them to AVCHD.

Shrinked movies have no copy protection so you could use whatever you want to rip them to HDD. From what I've read Format Factory sucks big time (and is ripping off OSS tools) so I suggest using Handbrake instead.

Or (apart from checking those thing next time before encoding) you might use a cheap media player like the WD TV Live to playback this stuff.

Thanks seagrave for the replay, and you are right, it is a massive project. The idea or situation I am about to enbark upon myself is this: I want to get rid of all the dvd's I own which are many. They are taking up too much room and they are too easily damaged. Any new movies I get will be treated just the same as the other ones. I plan to put them all onto HDD for viewing access via PS3 media server. I have completed about 30+ movies in the past 2 days converting to .avi format and have lost very minimal video and sound quality. I have my PS3 in living room and 360 in bedroom and it's much easier to do it this way.
I'm not looking for any way to place them on different discs later, I want to eliminate the discs all-together.
With that said I want to explain more in depth as to my delima. When you shrink a movie using DVD Shrink you are not actually taking any of the copy protection off the movie. You are just breaking the protection to copy it to HDD and then put it on a DVD5 disc. Now what I have done is put them on DVD5 disc. When I put the movie into my PC it acts like a movie in the way it starts playing. YAY! When I try to rip the movie it stops part way. I have tried many ripping tools and have no luck. I have used One Smart Ripper to get the files back onto HDD and that worked great but when I try and convert them run into the same issue. So I think that DVDShrink actually does something to the disck when it burns the files back on. Need help. Thanks again.

Thanks Chetwood. I have only been using Format Factory as of recently as I am just now trying to convert all my movies to files for viewing via PS3 media server. Was not aware that Format Factory was like that, I just know that it has done everything I need it to. The only issue I have is the processing time. It takes so long to copy or convert a movie. Is handbrake fast? Another thing I should let everyone know. I am by no means an expert of any kind when it comes to the audio/video stuff. I have downloaded Handbrake and it seemed almost like there was too much stuff for me to handle. I don't want to mess things up. Is there somewhere I can find an offline guide for handbrake to help me understand how to do things with it. I really want to understand what I'm doing not just do it cause thats what the program does. Have extensive knowledge of computers but when it comes to this it's like cryptanite to superman, I have no clue.
I appreciate the advice. I will try Handbrake again this time being a bit more patient with it cause I admit I installed it and I couldn't find what I was looking for right away so I uninstalled it. Thank you.

As chetwood said, a movie processed with shrink has no DRMs on the disc or in output files.

You can open a shrink prepared disc w/o having to use AnyDVD or DVDFab, if the disc was properly burned and the media was good. Actually a good sign of a burn is it can be ripped.

Thanks garmoon, it seems that I am having issues with the first batch of DVD burned movies. I was using an older version to do the first batch some time ago and the movies that were done using 3.2 seem to work rather well. It was just confusing to me cause they would all play in just about any dvd player i own. It's all good though. I will work with what I have.
Again thanks all. This thread can be closed now.

As has been mentioned, when a DVD is ripped with DVDShrink, the copy protection is removed. So you only need a DVD Reader to read the burned discs, I highly recommend Imgburn.

The reason that may be having problems is bad media. We've all been burned by it one time. Even with bad media, they may be good initially and go bad over time.

Nope, DVD Shrink doesn't do that...Like other members suggested, you have a bad burn/disc,even if the disc might play okay-or start stuttering and pixelating about where the ripper is having problems.

Some people have success using a software that will skip some of the disc parts that have errors, like IsoBuster. You could also try a different drive, some are better readers...However, is a long shot, bad media+bad burning= BEST COPY PROTECTION(you can always add a light scratch or two just to make sure!!)

Piss me off, and I Will ignore You!

thanks cyprusrom. I have come to the conclusion that it's the discs I used. In the beginning I was using cheap discs and later I started using the more expensive ones due to copy issues with the cheap ones. It seams that I can rip the ones that were created using the more expensive discs.
Thanks again. Any other info would help. If i can get the moves off the other discs that would be great but if not, no biggie.

@klapre

As cyprusrom suggests, use a different drive to try to read them. If you only have 1, try friends' pcs. Some drives are better at reading discs than others. I have an older LG usb that will read a pizza.
