How do you store your backups?

I am starting to drown with all these DVD-Rs that never get used - old movies that I backed up and haven't watched in years. But my luck, I'll need the backup at some point down the road.
1 TB hard drives are < $100. Does anyone keep their backups on a hard drive? and then when you are traveling, it's easy to copy the files onto your laptop or big thumb drives.
Then the question - do you keep the backup as an ISO ready to burn a DVD? Or do you keep the native files in the video folder so they are ready to watch?
Recommendations?
Thanks!

And if you keep them on the hard drive, how do you play them?
If they are native files, what is the starting file to run? point nero showtime or other app to?
And if you keep them as an ISO, how do you unpack the iso on the fly to play it?
thanks!

If you already have the dvd + the backup you don't need to add them to a hdd ,unless you want the convenence so to that end it would be better to run them thru dvd fab or shrink, edit the crap & start & end frames including language & subs then convert to AVI,it'll save a stack of space coz it won't take long to fill the 1tb even if using AVI's
Edit:Nah not nero you use XBMC for windows or linux or mac, once installed inside the OS you just use the ADD in the BROWSE,it'll list all the hdd's on your comp simple as,properly setup it's groovy as,since it uses mpc you could play iso's on the fly

I can't stand wasting time looking thru shelves of DVD's, i convert my movies to AVI, either 1.4GB or 700MB, the DVD's act as a backup. I watch them either via PC's, a HTPC (for this i use VLC player or Media Player Classic), or old type xboxes using XBMC, such as scorpNZ suggested. All networked so there's lots of choice, and much more convenient than wasting time searching for a particular movie.

Sorry i nearly put that in the post before. If it's an action movie or graphically rich movie i choose 1.4GB, if it's anthing else it's 700MB. Most of my DVD's have been thru DVD Rebuilder anyway though AutoGK i find makes decent enough quality straight from the DVD source files ie 4/5/6/7GB or whatever of source files. At the end of the day if i really want to watch a movie in top quality i just dig out the original dvd, though for me that isn't very often as i'm one of those who watches a movie, series or program for the story ie content over eye candy everytime :)
edit- for anyone that doesn't know, if you want the output from AutoGK to be a single file you need to choose a non-even output size, ie 699MB instead of 700MB etc
edited for spelling

Storage is cheap. I'm going to buy a small storage array that I can put in the garage that I can connect using Fibre Channel to the media player, hence, I keep everything in uncompressed, native format.
Right now it's on multiple 1TGB external drives.

As my modern stuff was all bought two years ago i'm on 500GB drives, i have 15 on the main PC which acts as my media centre, though to avoid leaving the machine on too often i tend to copy chunks of documentaries and movies onto the hard drive of the HTPC or whichever xbox i will be using, or onto a 2.5" 80GB hard drive in a USB2.0 caddy that i use as a glorified USB stick.

since I started in the backup biz before writable DVDs were cheap, but CD-R was cheap, I formed a habit of backing up to 800MB MPEG-1 to create VCD's. Its a good intermediate form that captures most of the DVD quality (I use SVCD 480x480 res, KVCD encoding) yet plays on all PC's and most DVD players, as well as WM smartphones.
so now I still create these 800MB MPEGs, stash onto 1.5TB drives, in addition to backup DVDs. the 800MB files make good files to put onto a laptop to watch while traveling, on planes, etc. and can be used also on my phone, either as is, or knocked down further to 320x240.

I store all my Back-ups on Hard Drives as .iso files.
I watch them using VLC Media Player or mount them with Daemon Tools and play them with Nero ShowTime.
