Hello
Really hope you can help me with some advice please?
I have downloade shrink and it looks very good.

I am only interested in backing up my DVD collection to my hard drive or if a better option my external hard drive? (let me know)

I have just converted/backed up my first DVD to C drive = documents/dowloads file.

There are a total of 14 files as follows:-
3 x Video_TS = bup/wmp/wmp
3 x VTS_01_0 =bup/wmp/wmp
4 x VTS_01_1/2/3/4/ all wmp
4 x VTS_02_0 bup/0/1
wmp=Windows media Player

I really do not know how best to play the files? can you help by telling me how I can place the files in easy order (*maybe one file instead of 14?) to play with one click? if at all possible.
I have tried deleting some but this just stops the film working at all!

I am old and not very technical please keep it very simple
I just need to know how best to play the files on the hard drive through my pc.without having to navigate around 14 files!

many thanks Steve

Don't use WMP to play them - use the likes of Media Player Classic Home Cinema.
Run MPC and click 'File' > 'DVD' and browse to the folder containing the movie.
Highlight the folder and click 'OK'.
The movie will start like the DVD disk.
If it has a menu, use the mouse to make your choices.

http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/

Note that DVD Shrink is not suitable for ripping newer disks with updated protection - it is best used for shrinking the files.
Use the freeware DVDFab HD Decrypter for ripping.

Backing up your dvd's will take up some huge amount of space you might want to think about ripping, edit & convert to AVI.Depending if you like the movie or not you can size them from 699mb to 1.5gb,once all done you can access them with vlc media player,k-lite mega codec pack-(media player classic as the player) or my personal favourite xbmc for windows, this will do what your after & that's keeping the dvd's safe as you won't need them also it means you need less space which in turn will save money tho it would pay to get another hdd so you have two copies,it'll save having to convert all over again if the hdd fails & it would also go for ripping whole movies as you have mentuioned

EDIT:You don't need to rename anything one of the IFO files will start the dvd, unless you want to go direct to movie playing in which case use shrink to remove menu

hello
My friend
many thanks for your very fast reply..much appreciated.
please allow for my non technical mind? I do get htere eventually normally but slowly.
OK sapce is not an issue as I have over 750GB of free space both on my laptop and external Hard drive which is just for DVD`s and has 500gb

I need to keep all this as simple as possible..
I do happen to have already the Media Player Classic Home Cinema & codec pack..it was just because i was trying out several DVD copiers and WMP seemed to play better? I can of course use either so thats ok.

The films I am uploading/converting from DVD collection..and will be watched exclusively for foreseeable future on this laptop..not tv or other.

Please can you tell me how to get rid of some of the files i did delete the 3 x 123 Classic files? lea ving 11 files in the folder..
do i need to keep all these files..or can i just delet some..
this would be the biggest help to me...as it would be easier and cleaner just selecting the movie from one or two files than a whole list

sorry if i seem dum

all the best Steve

lol..you obviously don't have many movies if you think 750gb is enough space, just in case in the future you decide more space is required use dvdflick to convert & down size

OK so all you want to do is select one file so movie plays, best bet then is use imgburn to create an ISO of all those files, once that's done all you need do is drop n drag that ISO into the movie player or have it listed in the playlist to start the movie.Instead of having a bunch of files in a folder like you have now, using an iso all those files are now contained in a single container which will automatically play

Before commencing you must have a folder with all the files that were created by dvdfab or shrink so any movie that you deleted files from must be re ripped

Open imgburn
In right hand pane click on CREATE IMAGE FILE FROM FOLDERS/FILES
use browse folders then clik ok
select destination of iso & clik ok

If your still unsure use the menu toolbar in imgburn to select help the guide is there

I just need to know how best to play the files on the hard drive...
1.-If you want to back-up your DVD Collection into your Hard Drive of your PC or External.......you best bet is to down-size the ISO File (+3.5GB) into AVI (-1.5GB) usind DVD-Flick or others Programs......you never know how many Movies you will end up in there in few years from now ?!

2.-The VTS-TS File is from one Movie Only and the VTS_01,02,03 etc are Champters of the Movie.....do not delete them 'cos you will end up with parts of a Movie only.

3.-Since you already know that the Movies is located at: (C:) Drive they are by name there already ("Usually").

4.- To see those files: all you need is to open your Media Player Program and right Click the Screen of it....
a long window will open, then on "SOURCE" or "SELECT SOURCE" click "DVD from Folder" or "PLAY FROM FOLDER" > Select or ON "Local Disk (C:)"....you will see all your Movies by name > Click It or dobble Click it > "OPEN" > "OK" and wach them !!!

NOTE: if the Movie do not open is becouse that Media Player Program do not support that Video Format......so you will need to open another DVD Player Program like NERO SHOW TIME Wich suport many video formats or others already mention here....

GOOD LUCK !

Hello
Many thanks for getting in touch I am obliged to you and scorp, attar
Hope all you guys can appreciate that there are some folk..I am one.who for reasons i would prefer not to bore you with find it very difficult to follow technical instruction? no matter how basic that info.
so please bare with me,while I try and understand fully...I just end up frustrated...
I actually downloaded yet anothe piece of software AVI by Leawo converter..but it said it could not recognise the files ie my dvd and when it did convert it only would convert 17minutes of a 55 min dvd? otherwise I think i am on the right track at least.

If you folk could give me the smoothest path to do this copying I would be obliged IE

DVDFAB HD Decryptor can do it however after trial period runs out you will only be able to rip to DVD 9 after which shrink can do any editing or shortening of front & end frames

http://www.dvdfab.com/download.htm

EDIT:Guides on how to use fab are at top of page in the tabs

Don't know it looks like you have to download a whole stack of separate programs, there must be tutorials there you'll have to read them or just download dvdfab as it does it all with one button after selecting either DVD 5 or DVD 9 output

Hello Again
Well after a few days I am sort of in the swing the DVD`s that require dycrypting have being done using FREE DECRYPTOR which came bundles with a complete suite..I have then converted the files to AVI using the converter.

The problems? well I end up with a whole load of very big Video TS container of files e.t.c you guys said I should not delete these files so I have put them all in a seperate folder but as some are 7gb!!! this is not good

can I delete some? or is there a way of reducing there size if I have to keep them

hope you can all help once more cheers Steve

If you have already converted the movie to AVI, then the Video_TS folder is useless(unless you want to use it again to convert/burn to disc in the future), so you can delete it.
