Lets say I'm watching a film that has 1-2 foreign characters in it. Now the film is largely in English but during the film these characters speak their native tongue a few times - where subtitles are needed.

I want to shrink this movie by removing all unnecessary subtitles, how can I tell by looking at this:
- What I should and shouldn't remove. Now I don't care for any subtitles (to save space and add quality), I just need to know how to tell what IS and what ISNT vital.

Thanks!

Start off by ditching all the subs in languages you don't need.. still won't get that on a single layer so you need to hike up the compression some.

Then you need to watch the film and take note of where you need the subs.. you can edit the file manually (I use a plaintext editor.. others may suggest something like subtitle workshop) and take out all the text you don't need.. leaving just the bits you do... it's not hard, but it can be tedious.

Usually a separate stream carries the foreign subs only. You can verify this on playback in PowerDVD or VLC which will also show which stream number it is.

I remove all but the English subtitles (or whatever your native language) just out of habit and desire. But if you think that is going to make a hill of beans difference in your compression ratio, it is not. 4 subtitle files with sizes of 3 or 4 mb or less is not going to matter in the grand scheme of things.

love it.. 2 answers not actually addressing the question..

we KNOW which stream is which.. we can see that from the screenshot.. also we can see that compression will still be required (or a d/l disk) even with all the subs removed..

so for starters rip the film to an mpeg2 or something with a seperate subs file.. I would guess English? (stream 1) saved as a .srt I can just edit those.. you may not be able to..

read the actual question again guys and suggest HOW to EDIT subs without resorting to my brute force methods with plaintext editors and taking notes of which lines I need to change/remove/keep/edit.. like I said.. not exactly hard, but it is very tedious.

Once edited as required I would be tempted to embed them in the picture and do away with the subs file altogether.

comments?

With that attitude? Probably not. Good luck with your problem.

AFAIK a subpicture stream can be a mix of selectable and forced.
I would expect the English subs to appear only when the characters were talking foreign - if the forced option was selected in DVD Shrink.

You read the fooking question!
"I want to shrink this movie by removing all unnecessary subtitles, how can I tell by looking at this:"
Which I answered.
"What I should and shouldn't remove. Now I don't care for any subtitles (to save space and add quality), I just need to know how to tell what IS and what ISNT vital.
"Which is also answered.
Not everything associated with editing films is rocket science Paula. As attar said unless you go in and edit out the forced you shouldn't have any problems and they will only show when needed, as long as subtitles have not been turned on in your player settings.
