I have used DVD Shrink and Nero 7 Essetials to rip then burn movie DVDs to DVD+RW DVDs. Funny thing is, after I downloaded DVD Shrink I tried burning my first DVD with total success. I got the previews, main menus, and the whole movie with no problem. It played on my home DVD player flawlessly.

After trying this again, I have NEVER been able to do it again.... I have no idea why. Every disc I burn, when I put it into my home DVD player, says that the disc isn't compatible and that I need to insert a compatible disc. Then I started reading the forums on the internet trying to see what the problem was. I have tried so many thing with DVD Shrink and Nero 7 Essentials and haven't been able to reproduce the first DVD+RW copy I had. I.E. I've tried Hard file format, ISO format, and then burning using directly with Nero 7 Essentials (whish by the way is a totaly pain in the ass). I have also, tried reinstalling both programs, I have reformatted my comper then reinstalled. I don't remember how I made the first successful copy and have gotten so tired of trying that I'm finally posting on the forums. PLEASE help me out here with any possible solutions.

EDIT: Now when I try to burn them the same way, they wont play on my RCA DVD player but they WILL play on my SONY. The first one I made will play on both (with the same programs and dics) so I'm still confused.

Thank you for even looking at this post.

Try
1. Ripping With DVDFab HD Decrypter
2. Shrink to Compress to DVD 5
3. Imgburn to Burn to Blank 8X -R Disc (Verbatums)

All Free Programs.

Or do everything with DVDFab, I personally think it is the best program out there if you don't mind paying for a program. That said, remember the movie companies will change the encryption from time to time and the older programs will not be able to handle them. Even DVDFab will have trouble handling some newer discs, while they are very proactive in updating the program to handle the newer updated encryption. With the latest update from DVDFab I have yet to run across a disc it couldn't handle.

I would agree from my experience Verbatim discs tend to work the best for me as well, i tried most of the others and only ran into problems, and before you ask, yep i've tried both the really cheap ones as well as ones that cost more if ordered via newegg... I found Verbatim simply work.

Yes You Can Do Everthing With DVDFab. It's Just That This System Works For Me. Another Great Ripping Program Is ANYDVD. It Has A FREE Trial Period. But What Is Really Important Is The Media Type You Use.

I Get My Media From Supermediastore.com and My Equipment From Newegg.com

For me it comes down to time and convenience. I can back up and have a new DVD in about 15 minutes from start to finish, by simply doing essentially a copy. Just curious how much time and effort does it take you?

Its not only (or really at all for me) about time, but about quality. If I am going to go to the trouble of making a back up disk and paying my hard earned money for programs, devices, and media, I want it to be as near perfect as I can make it. DVDFab is a good program, but it does have its issues on occasion. It will work for everything, but I find the quality to be much better when I introduce other more specialized programs after the initial rip. My process follows Berryone's advice pretty close but I usually use VobBlanker following the rip to remove the extras and other items I don't want, this will reduce the compression necessary for a SL disk. I then follow with DVD Rebuilder for compression and then burn with ImgBurn. This produces a very high quality back-up. And while it does take a little more time, for me it is well worth it.

As for the OP's problem, you first need to upgrade to either Fab or AnyDVD as I think someone suggested. Shrink is still an excellent transcoder, but its time as a ripper has come and gone as it can no longer handle most newer encryptions.
