Supposedly this is one of the easiest things to do but after 4 attempts every dvd I made has been burned in its native region when I have specified time and again to make it region free.

Like many, I hate the Last of the Mohicans Directors cut.. cuz its garbage and the theatrical release is only available in UK so I have been on a quest to make a theatrical cut in a Region 1 format. I purchased the region 2 LOTM disc and first tried to shrink it in a region free format and make it into a .iso file which I burned later. and YES, it was still in Region 2. I tried making it Region 1 instead of being region free and the same problem occurred, still ends up being a region 2 disc.

So then I used ANYDVD to decrypt it first, removing every type of region code possible- taking that file and shrinking it with DVD shrink in Region Free settings into an .iso file, burned it and What do I get??? A region 2 disc. I mean WTF is going on here??

Is Warner Bros so sophisticated that they figured out a way to make this disc impossible to change region codes?!?!?!

If it can be ripped to the HDD, there is no more region code.
If it's a PAL disk (and region 2 uses the PAL video system) and you live in North America it might be rejected by your standalone player - because North America uses NTSC video.

Let me put you up to speed because I am aware of all that.

The disc I have is PAL and I want to convert it into a region-free format or something that will play on Region 1 or NTSC. I have tried numerous times and have ripped it with DVD shrink, AnyDVD and even DVDFAB but when I burn the files to disc they ultimately end up being in PAL format and are unplayable. I dont know what I could possibly be doing wrong because according to what youre saying the ripped files will be region-free by default if they are ripped to your hdd. Why is it when I burn them to disc they still come out in PAL format?

Region coding and video format are separate issues.

Ripping the files to the HDD does not change the video format.
Drag one of the ripped VOB files onto MediaInfo and check the the format.

Yes, Im sure this is whats causing the problem. So how do I change the format to NTSC or something that I can use on an NTSC dvd player?

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/convert_pal_to_ntsc.cfm

- but you lose the menu.

Or the best solution is to get a standalone that will play a PAL DVD.
