I'm trying to rip my DVD collection to put on my media center PC, but every DVD I rip ends up having really tall bars on the top and bottom of the screen.

When I watch the DVDs on my DVD player, they have only small sized bars on the screen.

The top and bottom bars on the ripped DVD take up about half the height of the screen.

What am I doing wrong?

You're likely backing up the wide-screen (16:9) format of the movie, see if you can choose 4:3 format. Or view the backup on a wide-screen TV.

I've tried using DVDShrink, DVDFab and dvd::rip on Linux, and get the same results with all of them.

Check this:

or maybe looks dobble black line on top and bottom like this:

Check the Output Setting on Shrink:
Edit > Preferences > Output Files( Check the first 4 boxes, excep the last one #5) > OK

Make sure you use the latest DVDFab, 'cos it could be a Copy Protection issue here:

http://72.55.191.8/download/DVDFab7025Beta.exe

and also.....try to play your back-up DVD on your PC. Maybe is your DVD Player:
If your DVD Player Control Remote have a Setup Botton...make sure the TV Aspect of it, is set to Wide-Screen (16:9) 'cuz some video files (Original DVD or Backup HHD) are Finicky when they are play back.
